UW beats Cal for shot at 12-win season

Last night Cal and Washington played an excellent game that went back and forth, right down till the end.

We moved the ball easily down the field in the middle of the first quarter but were stopped short and forced to kick a field goal. We struck again in the second quarter, this time for a TD as Jake Locker found a wide open K. Middleton for an easy one, 10-0.

Shane Vereen then began his mission to single-handedly destroy us and our defensive morale, going inside, outside, anywhere he wanted for huge gains. It was especially pathetic when they ran outside as we couldn't even get close to him. He scored from 21 yards out to bring them to within three points. That's where it stood at halftime.

Early in the third quarter we made it 17-7 on a play action pass to the TE, Locker just getting rid of it with a perfect throw before getting killed. It looked like we were going to break this game open in the third when Fosh found one of his guys on the sideline but I caused a fumble on a huge hit with the strong safety. But we threw that opportunity away with a bad read and CAl picked it off.

Cal came back to get it to within three points again, this time on a pass to Vereen. He looked like he was in a different dimension than our players for most of this game. Cal got the ball back and scored again, an easy option keeper off the edge by Riley. Our guys crashed inside and then stopped and watched. Fuckin game. That gave them the four point lead.

We took the lead back with a follow-up kickoff return for a TD.

Cal then allowed Vereen to do his deal and a few minutes later they once again had the four point lead, on a 33-yard rush where I'm not sure we laid a finger on him.

Locker and Washington had their wits about them though. There were just over four minutes left. Just enough time for a lengthy drive. ANd that's just what happened. Locker completed a few nice passes and we mixed in the running game as well. Chris Polk was tackled at the one yard line with about 35 seconds remaining and Cal had to use their last timeout. We scored on the next play, and managed to stop the pass four times in a row, allowing us to come away with a big win.

Next we face Washington State in Pullman. If we can win that one, we'll hopefully get a winnable cpu bowl game and get 12 wins on the season... We need at least 4 stars to recruit decent guys next year, please.

Man you have already been past the number of wins you needed to become 4 stars. All it takes to move from 3 to 4 stars is 7 wins.
