Race Report Week 1 - Iberian, 50 Laps

    Week 1 - Iberian
Week 1 of the V8 Supercar Racing Series is in the book. The race was held at the famous (and made up) Iberian Raceway,in Monserrat, Spain.

The field of 7 available for this race consisted of Rynoaid, JMS, DelDoubletop, Hellisan, BlyGilmore, Ca$ino, and Bondzai007 who was a last-minute replacement. "Grab a car, hold on tight and don't wreck us" is what we told him. Right as the race began a pack of four separated themselves from the field. JMS led the way, followed by Del, Ca$ino, and Hellisan. These four had a good 10-lap battle for the lead.

JMS appeared to struggle with his setup and was squealing the tires a lot, both on the entries and exits to just about every corner.

Hellisan passed at the end of the 9th lap and didn't look back. JMS, Del, and Ca$ino staged a great battle for the 2nd through 4th spots for a number of laps until Ca$ino and Del pulled away from JMS.

    Driver Reports

Bondzai007 - I was glad to get the last minute invite to this race. I had 2 main goals in this race; finish and don't wreck anybody. I accomplished both. When the race started I was not excited to see I was in the middle of the pack, I just knew bad things were going to happen. But I got through the first turn staying in the pack and then everyone got around me with no issues. I never thought I'd have so much fun coming in last place by a long shot, but I had a blast. I managed to get 14,000 CR for my last place finish but the track officials may be garnishing that to replace all the sod I tore up.

JMS493 - I was nervous to start out in 1st. I had virtually no time to work on this car. I bought it about 20 mins before the start. I quickly tuned what I knew would help and not screwing with stuff that might matters worse. I was very happy leading the pack for a good 10 laps but knew that wasn't my place in the natural selection of things. I was able to fight off Del for a while which made me confident but then as the Helli machine made its way through it was only a matter of time. We had a little rub as he passed . I dont remember Ca$ino passing but that kind of irked me. My goal was 3rd place but i cam in 4th. I am happy with the outcome. I hope I can put more prep time in next race. I tell what really adds to the fun is racing around the bottom half of the field. Crusing with Bly, Bondzai, and eventually chasing Ryno added some excitement as most of the time it feels like I am hotlapping.

Hellisan - First of all, I was bummed. Why did the Steelers have to be on national television this evening? Jeebus. Nevertheless, had a lot of fun. Started out smack dab in the middle of the pack, so I was pleased that the race sort of separated itself early on with myself at the rear of the front four. Didn't have to worry about getting tangled up with anybody which is a concern early in a 50-lap race. Didn't do much practicing for this track but had seemed to hit it several times in my season mode races, for whatever reason so I knew it. Heinous track but fun all the same. I figured we'd have some accidents, so why try too hard. had a couple of near misses, one of which I forgot where the first straight ended, and almost barreled into the wall. Managed to get it under control. The setup seemed to work well for me. Some comments about my tuning setup at the end of the race, I'd be honored of anybody wanted to use it. It's available on my storefront, and will be updated often for whatever track we're racing on. Try it, make changes that suit you, or laugh at it, I don't mind.

Ca$ino - im happy with the outcome. i ran a consistent race. some good battles and noone wrecked each other.

DelDoubleTop - Thanks to everyone I had a good start and found myself higher than I thought as I hadnt planned to push early on. I had a couple of little offs so my car suffered a little right rear wear in the first stint then when I pitted I didnt realise the pit exit was like that n didnt get chance to call my exit but luckily the track was clear. By this time Helli was just uncatchable and driving really well so my aim was to try and catch Casino for a 2nd place but man that guy is so consisitent. Then it wasn't long before Helli's car was filling my mirror so backed off very slightly n let him through as by this time it was about keeping my 3rd spot as Jms was going good behind me I was concerned about that at the time. Great race and a good drive by all and congrats to Helli for the win, nice drive to Casino for 2nd.

im happy with the outcome. i ran a consistent race. I tried not to push it early on like i usually do. Trying to be more of Cole Trickle after he has his heart to heart with the crew cheif about being a moron with cars than the Cole Trickle pushing the car to the limit. We had some good battles. After taking 2nd, I knew 1st was out of the question with Hellisan out front so I just tried to keep everyone else off my back. Del was putting up a good fight. Kept seeing the distance getting smaller and smaller until he backed off to let Hellisan through. I never looked back after that. Glad everyone had fun and noone wrecked each other.

Please submit a driver report if you participated in last night's race. Keep it to one very long paragraph, talk about what you did well, not so well, etc.

Interesting on those races. If I can make it I will. Good race, you ran some good laps and I think you could have given Casino a run.

Maybe it's just because of the fact that you were lagging a lot on the screen - so the game was trying to reconcile your position on the track, or something - but in the replay (watch on Ryno's storefront) you were like, tires crossed up, smoking, though most corners. Sorry about the bump as I went by, I had a hard time telling exactly where you were most of the time. I thought you knew I was gonna try and pass you there too. It's called a rear view mirror! ;)

    Race video

Now this is pretty boring. But it is all i got. Next time I plan on saving the replay and then recording it with my HD-PVR....and switch to each driver for a few laps. That would be more entertaining for everyone. Especially if there is some action between racers. I was rushing around last night and didn't get a chance to be properly prepared.

This is basically a video of me racing last night. There is some occasional lag but for the most part it is ok. Enjoy if your really bored.

    Laps 16-31

    Laps 32-45

Overall I'm happy with the results. Wasn't looking to do much in this first race - just find my footing and get used to competitive racing again. Biggest goal was to finish the race in one piece. Casino almost ended that dream, but my car didn't get thrown off too much by a slight bump. Right now I need to work on tuning my car to close the gap a little bit between me and some other drivers, and work on my lines.

Some of it hopefully, but overall we are "sim" just as we are in NCAA. And that means we don't just run each other down, you look to pass without crashing the other guy. I mean when you look at replays, it's clear that as a whole we're trying to figure out how to keep the cars going in a nice line still. So yeah as we get more comfortable there will be higher intensity. But we'll keep the same overall style of racing I think.

Race Primer for Sunset Peninsula V8 Supercars

We have a rather challenging yet fun track in Sunset Peninsula for the second week of our V8 Supercars series.

Here is a quick turn by turn description of how to get good times and hopefully avoid the major pitfalls this track presents.

Tuning Setup: Mine can be found on my store front if you just wanna download and run with it. I use less Aero for this one as you don't want people to easily pass you on the striaght if possible. Although it does make for a slightly trickier ride. I use the HOlden, so obviously the Fords might have different characteristics.

    Tires: 28.0, 28.5
    Gearing: 2.63 FD
    Alignment: -0.7 degrees, -0.7 degrees, 0.1 degrees, -0.5 degrees, 5.6 degrees
    Anti Roll: 10.51, 8.60
    Springs: 812.8, 617.5
    Damping: 9.6/7.5 Rebound, 4.6/3.5 bump
    Aero: 220, 302
Diff: 100% both. This was default, I have no problem with the way the car handles, not a typical setup but it's what I'm using.

Pit Location: Coming out of Turn 16 it will be on your right, on the inside of the main straightaway.

Turn 1: Features one of the two main possible "race enders" as I like to call them. You will be coming in hot, at around 165-175 MPH, and on your right is the wall at the end of the pit road. The very best times are achieved by keeping one's foot on the gas through this turn or letting off just slightly and cruising by quite closely to the wall. If you hit it, YOU ARE DONE. Save yourself the heartache, and take a safe line through here. At the end of the corner you want to be on the left side of the mini straight that follows.

Turn 2/3: As you can see above (which is a bit exaggerated) this is a double part turn. You want to "straighten it out" by making it one long turn, which is achieved by smoothly coming in around the inside of the first turn, letting the car drift to the outside, then coming along in close to the curb at the end of the corner.

Turn 4: Little chicane, don't come in too hot, you're setting yourself up for good speed on the mini straight that follows this, no point in rushing.

Turn 5: The second big "race ender" is found here. The curb on the left-hand side can straight up roll your car. These V8 supercars pretty much eat curbing for lunch and spit it out, so overall I don't expect anyone would roll here but I see it constantly in other races. You wanna be going a high speed through here but stay well away from the curb on the left or the wall on the right. If you have to choose, take the wall!

Turn 6: Corner that looks like it's wide at first and tightens up on you. I take it much wider than the game's braking line, and try to come out with a little momentum. The safe line close to the curve is fine too.

Turn 7/8/9: Nice series of turns you wanna take as smooth as possible to have good speed coming out. Try to avoid curbs, not because they'll tip you but because they might fishtail your car/cost you speed.

Turn 10: Hugging the left wall approaching this turn, if you have good speed from the prior three corners you need to start braking at the "2" sign, and attempt to come through smoothly from outside to the inside curb on the right without touching it.

Turn 11/12: Again, smoothness here. Set up to take the 12/13 combination in a straight line leading to the straight. Turn 11 should be approahced somewhat similarily to turns 2/3, try to take it in one smooth turn rather than redirecting constantly.

Turn 13: With these cars you can run over the curb on the left without it affecting your stability too much, but if you do, be light on the accelerator. Try to get maximum speed for the straight.

Turn 14: You can take it quite fast, but the most efficient, safest way for overall track speed is to downshift to third, hug the curb on the left, and come out of it on the left hand side. You're setting up a wide turn on...

Turn 15: It's tempting to take this as fast as you can and shoot up onto the apron as was common in Forza 2, but that hurts you in this game. Go wide leading into this hug the turn, setting up a shallow approach, basically in line with the tread marks leading up to the apron. If you shoot up onto the apron at a steeper angle your car will lose stability/traction/speed.

Well what can I say other than what a race. Superb drives from VaSteelah and Helli. Congrats to you both. I tried a very strange setup for me with zero downforce and kind of held it together with a few errors. It was very worrying to exit a corner and see a car on 2 wheels right in front of me but I managed to avoid what would have been a huge accident, haven't got a clue how I did though. check out the pics on my storefront.

Thank you for hosting and organising these races it is awesome

p.s. I am very worried bout Amalfi Coast lol. Do you think their will be passing?

Good racing Del, and thank you Bondzai fo dancin with Helli in turn 10 so i could get the lead back, lol. This would have definetly been a different race without traction control and me not having the pole position.

it was lonely in 4th place after JMS thought he had skill and tried to take turn 1 like a pro. clipped the wall and ended his chances. :p

    good job lol.

i literally came within a few inches of clipping the wall too on lap 15ish.

I also got creamed by two cars of guys who already finished. VASteelah's ghost car bumped me from behind before Helli's car absolutely destroyed me.

Luckily I was able to limp to a 6th place finish, but I watched an 8.5K foot lead rapidly shrink to under 4K. If I had another lap to go it might have gotten interesting.

I'd have to say you were the most improved for sure. having your own car/being able to tune it help? hehehehe. You were hitting your lines a lot better, etc. Good work. (y)

Had a couple of mistakes, hit a couple of walls, but overall looked like a totally different Bondzai.

Bly also looked good in the beautiful Orrcon Steel Ford, if you become more smooth on/off the gas you will start to put some good lap times together Bly.

PS Bondzai, I fucked up in two ways on that pass attempt where we collided. One, I thought you had hit the wall and you hadn't, that's why I thought I had enough speed to carry. Then, when you were willing to let me go since I had a small edge, I was watching you to see if I had room, so I got really deep into the corner before I started to turn. If I take my normal turn I wouldn't have been in your way like that, that one was all on me.
