    Week 1 Game Summary

    Auburn 24 Virginia 10

The Cavaliers began their season vs. #19 Auburn at home in Charlottesville and was hoping to get started out with a giant "W". The game started out extremely close with both teams moving the ball but just not punching it in. It was a 3 -0 game with Auburn leading, the Cavs had the Tigers deep in their territory and it seemed was about to take the lead. However, UVA QB Strauss, made a bad decision and threw into coverage where the Tigers picked it off in the endzone and ran it back for the first TD of the game.

The first drive of the second half, the Cav's drove down the field but had to settle for a FG. With the score a close 10 - 3 in the 4th quarter, Auburn drove down to around the Cavaliers 20 yard line and was stopped short of their first down. On 4th down, the Tigers choose to fake the field goal and go for the score, making it a 17 - 3 game.

Now down two scores, the Cav's began to air it out, without much success. The Tigers scored again on a 24 yard pass from Newton to Stallworth, with 4:44 remaining in the game.

On the Cav's final drive, they finally were able to put the ball in the endzone with a 23 yard pass from M. Strauss to Kirk, who made a phenomenal catch.

    Week 2: UVA vs FSU

    Virginia 21 FSU 35

In week 2, the FSU Seminoles proved too much for the Cav's. A high powered offense by the 'Noles and turnovers by the Cav's were the difference in the game. At 0 -2 early in the season, UVA needs to practice on reducing the turnovers and controlling the game clock. But, with a lack of talent and depth on the defense and O-Line, this looks like it could be a long season.

    Week 3: UVA vs Indiana

    UVA 42 Indiana 59

Here we are again, another loss for the disappointing Virginia Cavaliers. The Wahoo's went into this game expecting to come out with their first "W" of the year but instead drop to a depressing 0-3. Apparently, the team left their entire defensive team behind in Charlottesville and played with the band instead.

The offense, led by Strauss, tried to keep up with the onslaught brought by Indiana but just couldn't do it. Although Strauss had plenty of passing yards (431), he did throw a season high 2 INT's.

Something has got to change at practice this week for Virginia if they expect to win any games this year. They have to find a D and some kind of running game to go with their aerial assault.

    Week 4: Duke vs. UVA

    Duke 51 Virginia 36

Duke stumbles into Charlottesville 0 - 3, just like Virginia. Somebody had to come out with a win in this one and it wasn't going to be easy for either side. Neither Duke nor UVA had any defense to speak of but, both had plenty of offense.

Duke was led on offense D. Scott at running back with 27 carries for 194 yards, 2 TD's and S. Renfree at QB with 21 completions for 268 yards and 3 TD's.

The story once again for Virginia was turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. It looked as though the OC for the Cav's started panicing once behind on the scoreboard and got away from his gameplan. This led to 3 INT's and 1 lost fumble. Hopefully in the future, the team will stay true to it's weekly gameplan and not get into panic mode when down a few scores.

    Week 5: Virginia vs. Maryland

    Virginia 24 Maryland 14

And the Cav's are on the board!!!

#23 Maryland came into today's game against the winless Cavaliers heavy favorites. The Terps had yet to loose a game and the Wahoo's to win one, all that changed today. A strong defensive performance and a little bit of "the ball bouncing their way" led to their first win of the season.

The defense was led by SR Nick Jenkins with 3 sacks and JR SS Lavonte Battle with the pivotal pick late in the game. This was by far the D's best performance to date.

Another breaking development of note, the guys from Charlottesville found a running game. The ended the game with two 100 yard rushers, Payne with 135 yards on 23 attempts with 2 TD's and Wallace with 133 yards on 13 attempts with 1 TD. Freshman QB sensation, Mike Strauss, was 11 of 17 with 132 yards and 1 TD. He did however, still throw 2 picks. Better decision making when inside the red-zone should be an emphasis during the off week.

    Week 6: Bye Week

    Bye Week

Hopefully the team can use this extra week off to rest some bumps and bruises and prepare for a home game vs. Idaho. This should be a lock for the Cav's but they have already proven that they are capable of overlooking teams with their early losses to Indiana and Duke. A win next week would double the wins from the previous season and make it a whopping two in a row.

    Go Wahoos!!

    Week 7: Idaho vs. Virginia

    Idaho 14 Virginia 38

That make 2 in row!!!! The Wahoo's get another win on the season, making it their 2nd consecutive win this season and doubling the win total from last season. However, the loss was somewhat overshadowed by the loss of their star freshman QB and NCAA passing leader, Strauss, with a fractured foot that will keep him on the sideline for the next 10 weeks. He was hurt late in the third quarter on a short passing play that resulted in a TD for the Cav's.

Strauss will also be a big loss for the rushing game as he was the leading rusher on the day with 83 yards on 6 attempts. The rest of the rushing attack was brought on by K. Payne with 21 attempts for 49 yards and 1 TD and D. Wallace with 8 carries for 34 yards and a TD.

Burd, Green, and Snyder led the receivers with 109, 79, and 71 yards respectively.

    C. Johnson was a beast at DE today, coming away with 6 tackles, 5 solo's, and 3 sacks. T. Windle got his first pick of the year to go along with 4 tackles in the game.
