It was absolute pandemonium at the BCS Championship game that squared off SEC champ Tennessee and BIG 12 power Texas. This would be a game that will be remembered for years to come. The Vols' took the ball the start the game, trying to capture momentum early. This plan completely backfired as Da'Rick Rogers coughed up the ball on the second play of the game on a quick slant route. Texas would march it right down and score on a Malcom Brown touchdown catch. Tennessee's next possession showed a ton of promise, effortlessly utilizing the weapons that had gotten them to this point. Nice run off tackle for Lane, catches from Rivera, Rogers, and Hunter took them down to the opposing 15 yard line. On second down Bray was attempting to flip a ball over top a defender to a wide open Rodgers in the end zone but LB Steve Edmond had his jet pack on and leaped up to take it away for a interception. Coach Carr appeared furious on the sidelines with his team and got the defense fired up for the next series. The defense stifled anything Texas wanted to do on that particular drive and got the ball back for the offense. The ensuing series, Tyler Bray hooked up on a nice fade to the sideline where Justin Hunter grabbed it and tip-toed the rest of the way for a touchdown. To close the half out both parties were able to log a rushing TD from both sides and as the half was closing out Tennessee was looking to add another score to the board. That was when Tyler Bray again found Hunter on a deep dig route in the middle of the field and led him in stride for a score with just 10 seconds remaining. The third quarter was much like the second for the Vols' as Texas could find no way to slow that attack down. Bray led one drive down with long tosses all over the field that was finished off by another 1 yard Marlin Lane TD run. Texas was unable to answer and Tennessee took the ball back almost immediately to end the third quarter on a 68 yard touchdown strike to Da'Rick Rogers. This would put the score at 35-17 heading in to the final period of the season. Texas QB David Ash would not lay down easy as they responded with a big drive to start the quarter where he put Texas within 10 on a 15 yard scamper for a TD. The Vols would follow with their own FG and increase the lead to 13. Late in the 4th with little hope left, Ash connected with TE Barrett Matthews on a 12 yard pass to take it back to a 6 point deficit and a upcoming onside kick. With just 19 seconds left, Texas orchestrated a perfect onside kick that bounced off the shins of backup Vols tailback Raijon Neal and the Longhorns recovered! Two first downs later and they were on the Tennessee 25 with 4 seconds left. The final play will be questioned all offseason but they called draw up the middle for Brown, straight out of 'Friday Night Lights' he broke 3 tackles on his way to the endzone but was eventually tripped up inside the 10. VolNation stormed the field to celebrate in the confetti, Tennessee is National Champs!
