When's the last time you heard that phrase uttered? Anyway...

    Super Bowl XLVI

    Pregame:

There was a whole lot of chatter about this Super Bowl in the media, as there normally is, but even other NFL Coaches weighed in on the discussion. A lot of coaches thought the AFC was a tough defensive conference and the NFC didn't know how to play defense. While others thought the AFC just didn't know how to play offense. Would this game settle the debate?

Some controversy arose after the Divisional round games that led to the suspension of the Buccaneers head coach. The Skins were able to take advantage of the suspension and handle a less disciplined Bucs team to secure their spot in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs had the edge with the Vegas odds makers after a great comeback win against the Raiders in the AFC Championship game and were looking real good in the postseason.

Washington had a lot to look out for in their upcoming matchup with one of the leagues best defenses and the leagues leading rusher Jamaal Charles. They knew they would have to bottle up Charles if they were going to have any shot at winning this game. On the other sideline the Chiefs had to contend with with rookie sensation Roy Helu and a solid defensive unit. Both teams were similarly built so analysts were anticipating a really competitive Super Bowl.

    First Half:

The teams met at mid-field of Lucas Oil Stadium for the coin toss to kick off Super Bowl XLVI. The Chiefs won the toss and elected to kick. Washington didn't want to risk a turnover early in the game before they knew Kanas City's defensive gameplan so they came out running the ball. Helu had a couple nice runs and then he broke off a 70 yard TD run off a dive play when he completely fooled Tommy Kelly with a sweet juke move.

Helu was super stoked after the long TD run to open the Super Bowl against the leagues #1 rush defense. It was only the first possession of the game though and now the Redskins had to prepare for the Jamaal Charles show. Kansas City came out on their first possession and had a great mix of run and pass plays that set them up in scoring position. They ended up with a 3rd and 6 play and threw a quick pass out to Charles but O.J. Otogwe made a great play and was able to get to his man on a great angle that led to a perfect form tackle stopping Charles 2 yards short of the 1st down marker. The Chiefs were forced to attempt the field goal and Ryan Succop nailed the 34 yarder to take the score to 7-3 Skins.

Garrard and Helu moved the offense with some success on the next drive but a sack on 2nd down and an incompletion on 3rd down led to a 34 yard field goal from Graham Gano. It was only a 7 point lead but this was the Super Bowl and the Chiefs knew they had to respond. They orchestrated an impressive drive down to the 6 yard line and lined up in a passing formation. DeAngelo Hall was out wide in man coverage on Dwayne Bowe and he read the route perfectly and got underneath Orton's attempt to throw the comeback route and picked the ball off in the endzone.

Coach Matrix breathed a sigh of relief after the pick which prevented at least 3 points and decided to not look a gift horse in the mouth and was just going to run out the clock and go to the locker rooms. He called a few run plays and short passes and gained some field position. Time was winding down in the half and he saw the safety creeping in the box on the previous play so he decided to see if the deep route might get open on the next play. It was a bad call as Kansas City dropped a lot of men in coverage. Garrard had Tommy Kelly charging at him on the play but was able to step up in the pocket just enough to get the pass off, the movement affected his throw though and the pass sailed wide on Fred Davis. Gaffney was running a Go route down the sideline on the play and was in double coverage, Kendrick Lewis was in perfect position to pick off the poorly thrown ball but he missed the ball by about an inch and it sailed overtop of him and into Gaffney's hands. Gaffney somehow outran the coverage after the catch on his way to a 71 yard TD reception.

The Redskins now had a 17-3 lead with about :25 left in the first half. The Chiefs tried some deep passes to get into field goal range but couldn't complete them and the clock ticked down to 0.

    Second Half:

Kansas City got the ball to open the 2nd half and had to get some more points on the board. Orton got a quick first down on a pass to Heap. Unfortunately, that was all they could muster and they were forced to punt. They played great defense on the next series though and a sack on 3rd down led to a Redskins punt.

Then things started to careen off a cliff for the Chiefs, primarily because they had to rely on Orton to get back in the game. After a Chiefs first down Orton tried to hit Heap on a post route down the seam but little London Fletcher was sitting underneath in zone coverage and snagged the ball out of the air for the interception.

Coach Matrix likes to call screen plays after a turnover because most coaches get upset and try to be too aggressive. He called it right as Coach bjb called a LB blitz on the play and Roy Helu was wide open in flat. Anthony Armstrong and Chris Chester set up their blocks perfectly and Helu weaved his way through for a 46 yard TD.

It was now 24-3 in the latter half of the 3rd quarter and the Chiefs had to abandon the run. Orton threw a great pass to Bowe to pick up a first down but on his next pass he didn't see Otogwe lurking overtop the outside receiver on the Go route and he stepped up and made the pick. Washington played it safe and only threw when they needed to and were able to add another 34 yard field goal to take things to 27-3 early in the 4th quarter.

Coach bjb tried his best to get the ball downfield but ended up going 3 and out and they decided to punt. Washington got into scoring range again but laid up on 3rd down and kicked another FG, this time from 38 yards. Down 30-3 with 4:30 left in the game didn't leave the Chiefs with many options. Orton tried to hit his receiver on a deep crossing route but overthrew it and Josh Wilson picked it off. It was Orton's 4th interception of the game and there was no coming back now. Washington tried to take as much time off the clock as they could but decided to kneel the ball on 4th down instead of attempt a long field goal.

Orton couldn't find the deep ball all game and the Chiefs went 3 and out again. The Skins got the ball back and Garrard just knelt out the remaining clock. The Washington Redskins are the Super Bowl Champions!

    Final score: 30-3 Redskins

This was an incredible turn around season for the Washington Redskins and Coach Matrix. It required a whole lot of luck but no one can take the victory away from them as this team will go down in the history books as one of the most improbable Super Bowl victors of all time (Maybe not SB III caliber but hey).
