    Washington State Cougars

Cougars win opener in ugly fashion

Pullman, Washington --Unlike most BCS schools who open their season with directional schools or the obligatory 1-AA creampuff, Washington State and Stanford took a different approach. These two teams squared off in an early Pac 10 showdown that the Cougars would win 39-32 as both teams had their struggles through out the game.

Washington State would jump out to a quick 3-0 lead as thy took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards before the offense sputtered causing them to settle for a field goal. Not to be outdone the Cardinal took their first possession and promptly marched down the field. Their drive covering 64 yards, but they would not have to settle for a field goal as halfback Toby Gerhart plunged over the goaline from a yard out. On the ensuing extra point Cardinal place kicker would miss he first of three extra point on the day to make the score 6-3 Stanford. Both team would freely move the ball up and down the field the rest of the first half with little success as the team moved to halftime with the score Stanford 12, Cougars 10.

The second half saw more sloppy play as the penalty flags started to fly on both sides. Over the course of the game the two teams would combine for 14 penalties for 144 yards. But neither team would let that deter them s the points started to fly early on in the second half. Taking the opening kickoff of the second half Stanford wasted little time in driving the length of he field and extending their lead to nine on a five yard touchdown pass. Just as it started to look as if the Cardinal might pull away Washington State answered in a big way.

On the following kickoff wideout Jeshua Anderson took the ball at the 14 yardline, cut left, broke a tackle and scampered 84 yards for the touchdown, to draw the Cougars back within two at 19-17. The two teams would struggle the rest of the way with defense as scores were traded back and forth through the third and into the fourth. With the score 32 to 24 in favor of Stanford the Cougars marched down the field behind the strong arm of quarterback Kevin Lopina who would throw for 305 yards and 3 touchdowns on the day, to knot the score a 32-32 after a 65 yard touchdown catch by Forzani, and subsequent 2 point conversion.

As time ran down in the fourth both team finally found some defense as they traded punts, until Washington State got something going with 2:13 left. Lopina riddled the Cardinal defense setting his team up with first and goal from the one yard line with just over one minute left to play. On the very next play halfback James Montgomery plunged over the goaline for the final score of the day, giving the Cougars a 39-32 win over the Cardinal.

Washington State moves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Pac 10 conference, while Stanford drops to 0-1 in both. Washington State returns to action next week as they host the Warriors of Hawaii in a 1:30pm start.

    Cougars Lock Up With Horns

Pullman, Washington --For the second time in as many weeks the Washington State Cougars will continue their unorthodox beginning to their season. This time though they welcome in an opponent from the Big XII south in the #3 rated Texas Longhorns.

The Cougars are coming off a win last week in their season and conference opener 39-32 against a lightly regarded Stanford Cardinal Team. In that game the Cougar defense struggled to stop the Cardinal through the air or on the ground. Washington State surrendered 461 yards of total offense to Stanford, including 302 through the air and another 159 on the ground. All three of those numbers put the Cougars below 90th in the nation in those categories.

Offensively though the Cougars had a strong performance behind the arm of quarterback Kevin Lopina as he threw for 305 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win. Lopina was not the only Cougar to put up decent numbers against a sub standard Cardinal defense last week. HB James Montgomery had 92 yards on 23 carries, while scoring twice in the win.

This week should prove to be a much tougher test for the Cougar Offense and Defense as the Longhorns come into this contest riding high after a 52-27 scorching of ULM. In that game Heisman Trophy candidate Colt McCoy threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns. Texas was also bolstered by the strong rushing attack of Cody Johnson who scampered for 126 yards on 22 carries while finding paydirt twice.

The Longhorn defense surrendered 340 yards of total offense, 314 of which came through the air, while only 26 came via the ground attack. Most of which came in mop up duty late in the game.

Looking forward to this game it's easy to predict a Longhorn blowout win against the Cougars. Their offense totally over matches the Cougar defense and McCoy should have a huge day against a young and inexperienced secondary. And with so much attention being given to McCoy, Johnson should be able to find some holes in the Cougars front line.

Don't get me wrong Lopina is going to get his yards through the air and the Cougs will hang around for a bit, but in the end experience and talent will win out.

    Prediction - Texas 35, Washington State 21

Cougars Roll Stangs, Look Forward to Trojans

    Pullman, Washington --

Sometimes a player has one of those games in which no matter what he does everything goes right. James Montgomery had one of those days as e and the Washington State Cougars dismantle the SMU Mustangs right from the beginning in a 49-17 beating on Saturday.

Montgomery would rush for 202 yards on the day and four touchdowns, along with catching a 93 yard touchdown pass in the rout. While the Cougars rushing attack looked great through out the game, the passing attack left a little to be desired as Kevin Lopina struggled at times tossing three interceptions to go along with two touchdowns and 266 yards.

While the Cougars offense was scoring at will on the Mustangs the defense was having some problems. Mainly stopping the passing attack of SMU who would torch the Cougs for 391 yards on the day. Certainly the coaching staff will have a tough week of practice in store for the defense as they prepare for next week.

Speaking of next week, the Cougars return to Pac 10 action as they travel down the coast to take on #9 rated USC, in a game that does not match up well for Washington State.
