Utes out last Stanford, 34-31 in OT!Luke Dunn debuts with 4 total TD's and 393 yards total offense The Utah Utes have a ton of youth starting for them in Coach Baron's 3rd year at the helm. None more so than redshirt freshman, Luke Dunn at QB. But, fortunately for the Utes, he's had a great rapport with true freshman WR, Luke Williams. The two Lukes hooked up 7 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns. The Utes needed every ounce of experience though, to outlast #22 Stanford. Though they were able to take a 21-10 lead into halftime after a Dunn rushing TD and Williams two TD grabs in the first half, Stanford came back in the second half by scoring two td's, and forcing the Utes to settle for just a field goal. But while Stanford would strike first with the second of Barry Sanders Jr.'s TD's in the game, Luke Dunn would have a masterful 4th down conversion on the Utes possession and follow through with a 5 yard TD to Kenneth Scott to tie things up, 31 all. The next possession for Utah would not go nearly as well, as they would be forced to settle for a field goal after two straight drops by Ute WR's. A fuming and nervous Coach Baron had no choice but to pin his week 1 hopes on his defense, that had been gashed all day long for big plays. But his defense came through in the clutch, with a TFL, a sack and an incompletion forcing Stanford to 4th and 28, out of field goal range. A desperation heave by Brett Nottingham would be caught... 10 yards shy of the first down, giving Utah a big conference win to start the season off. "I thought our guys had a heck of a game, coming up in the clutch. I'm kinda disappointed by Luke [Dunn]'s 3 INTs but he's young. And when he just calms down and goes through his progressions, he can make the kinda plays you saw tonight." Dunn also added 120 yards on the ground to his 273 yards passing. But Dunn has to cut the mistakes out of his game as Utah hosts Miami next week.
