    Savoie Shines in Season Opener

Minneapolis, MN - The Vikings & Lions would meet in Week 1 of the 2018 season, both with high hopes for the new year. The Vikings were looking to finally get over the hump - 4 straight NFC Championships, but they've yet to get past the NFC Championship under coach Simmons. The Lions have struggled in the North the last few years, but made some nice off-season moves and plan on making some noise in the division this year.

After a quick 3 & out by the Lions, the Vikings would march down the field with ease behind HB Jarrad Savoie, and the 2nd-year phenom would punch it in from 1 yd out 6 minutes into the game. The Lions would be forced to pun on their next drive. QB Teddy B would make his first mistake of the year 2 plays later, as he was picked off by Janoris Jenkins at the 50. The Lions would be unable to take advantage of the turnover, and another time-consuming drive resulted in a 2nd TD by Savoie to put the Vikings up 14-0 late in the 2nd. Another 3 & out by the Lions, and the Vikings would have the ball on their own 37, with 25 seconds left in the half. A beautiful screen pass to Savoie would go for 56 yds, leaving just enough time for a last-second FG. Score at half: Vikings 17, Lions 0.

Both D's clamped down in the 3rd quarter; a lone FG by Minnesota put them up 20-0 after 3. Late in the 3rd, the Lions decided to bench QB Stafford (4 of 10, 33 yds) in favor of 2nd-yr QB Parker Talbott. The QB responded well, and finally moved the ball against the stingy Minnesota D. The Lions would score in the 4th, a 9 yd TD pass to D. Coleman, but it was too little too late.

    Final Score:
    Vikings: 27
    Lions: 7

    Player of the Game:
    HB Jarrad Savoie - 23 carries, 114 yds, 2 TD; 2 catches, 62 yds
