Wake Forest Shocks FSU in Instant Classic!

The Deacons trailed 14-0 before the fans were even in their seats, thanks to a 68 yard bomb on the opening play, followed by a fumble returned for a TD on Wake Forest's first play of the game. It didn't get much better for the visitors from Winston-Salem, as there was simply no answer for the Seminole's ground attack. FSU held leads of 14-0, 21-3, and 28-10 as late as the 3rd quarter. And then Jimbo Fisher showed his genius.

Leading 31-17 in the 4th quarter, deep in Deacon territory, and with Wake Forest simply incapable of stopping the run, Clint Trickett dropped back to pass. Merrill Noel stepped in front of the slant route and sprinted 89 yards for the score. 31-24. The Wake defense, fully energized by the pick 6, came up huge on FSU's next drive, and Wake would get the ball back with about 4 minutes left. Tanner Price would lead a game tying TD drive in just 6 plays to even the score at 31-31. Unfortunately, there was still over 2 minutes on the clock. But FSU QB Trickett would choke under the pressure yet again, throwing an INT on the 2nd play of their drive. Now Wake has the ball in a tie game with 2 minutes on the clock. Double choke! Tanner Price gets picked off on the Deacons first play, and FSU returns the pick inside Wake Forest's 6 yard line. The Seminoles would punch it home just 2 plays later, with 1:12 on the clock. For the 2nd time in as many minutes, Tanner Price would be asked to lead a miracle game tying drive, and he would not disappoint. With 15 seconds left, the game would be tied again at 38's and headed to OT.

It should come as no surprise that this one was decided by a final turnover. Wake wins the toss and goes on defense first, and on the first play of overtime, Trickett threw his 4th and final interception. A couple of safe, field position runs for the Deacon offense, and Alex Kinal would kick the Deacons to a very improbable win.

    Wake
    Tanner Price; 26 of 39, 402 yards, 3 TDs, 3 INTs
Airyn Willis; 9 catches, 235 yards, 2 TDs
Mike Campanero; 5 catches, 89 yards
