The Carolina Panthers looked to continue their winning streak as they paid their annual visit to the Georgia Dome to take on the NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons. Despite the Falcons overall record of 4-8 on the season, the Panthers knew not to take their always tough rival too lightly. The Falcons recorded all four of their wins on the season so far in their home confines, and had only lost a single game this season in front of their home crowd to date. The Panthers overcame a tough Falcons team, and a sub-par game from star quarterback Cam Newton, to earn their 4th straight win with a 28-19 victory. The win improves the Panthers record to 11-2 on the season and assures the Panthers of a playoff berth for the first time since the current regime took over in 2012.

    1st Quarter

After a three and out from the Carolina offense on the opening drive, the Panthers defense got things going early with a pick 6 on the Falcons first possession. Panthers 2nd year cornerback Jakhari Brown would get his first of 2 picks on the day, as he would step in front of a Matt Ryan pass and take the interception back 43 yards for the touchdown and an early 7-0 Carolina lead.

    2nd Quarter

After a Falcons punt, the Panthers ground game made the difference on their next possession as they drove down field and scored on an 8 yard touchdown run by Elijiah Mitchell to push the Carolina lead to 14-0.

The Falcons offense was dealt a huge blow on their next possession, as electric wide receiver Julio Jones went down with an injury and would not return for the rest of this game. After the game it was discovered that Jones suffered an abdominal tear and would be lost for the rest of the season.

The Falcons would manage to drive down to the Carolina 10 yard line, only to stall and be held to a 26 yard field goal to cut the Panthers lead to 14-3. With just 2 and a half minutes to go in the half, a lot would happen in what was left of the 2nd quarter.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, Cam would be intercepted by Brent Grimes. Brown would get the ball right back for Carolina, on his 2nd pick of the day (and 3rd in the last 2 weeks).

The Falcons defense would then be hit with a major injury, as defensive end John Abraham would be helped off the field and wouldn't return. It was determined that Abraham suffered a ruptured disc and will also miss the remainder of the season for the Falcons.

The two teams would trade punts back and forth, as each team punted in back to back possessions, before the Panthers would end up with the ball at their own 31 yard line with 11 seconds left in the half. With the Falcons defenders set up to guard against a deep pass, Cam would find Wilkerson wide open underneath. Wilkerson would haul in the short pass, shoot between the closing Falcon defenders, and outrun everyone to the endzone with a 69 yard touchdown to push the Panthers lead to 21-3 at the half.

    3rd Quarter

The 3rd quarter would be all Atlanta, as they first added another field goal to cut the Panthers lead to 14-6. Then, following a Carolina punt, the Falcons would drive down field and score on a 32 yard touchdown pass to tight end Eddie Wallace. The touchdown and extra point cuts the Panthers lead to 21-13 with just seconds to go in the 3rd quarter.

    4th Quarter

The Panthers offense would continue to struggle in the hostile environment, and would again be held to a punt. The Falcons would take advantage of a tired Carolina defense and again march right down field to score. Wallace would haul in his 2nd touchdown of the day, this one from 7 yards out. Now trailing 21-19, the Falcons could tie the game with a two point conversion. Ryan managed to again find Wallace wide open in the endzone, but Wallace let the ball bounce right off his hands to fail the conversion attempt.

The Panthers would take possession with just over 3 minutes to go in the game, and desperately needed to get some offensive production or risk seeing this game slip through their fingers. Cam Newton would seal the game for Carolina as he broke through the heart of the Falcons defense on a keeper right up the gut. Newton would race 56 yards for the score to put the panthers up 28-19.

Needing 2 scores to win, the Falcons tried to pick up big chunks through the air. Ryan would be intercepted for the 4th time on the day and the Panthers would run out the clock to secure the victory.

In an unusual scheduling quirk, the Panthers will finish their season against three consecutive opponents from the AFC West. The Panthers will visit Mile High to take on the Broncos in week 15, then return home to host the Raiders and Chiefs in weeks 16 & 17 respectively. With such a tight race going on in the AFC West, the Panthers final 3 games could very well decide 2 division winners.
