The Carolina Panthers knew they needed a victory against the rival Atlanta Falcons, to keep pace with the surging New Orleans Saints in the NFC South divisional race. With another outstanding defensive effort and some big plays by quarterback Cam Newton, they were able to run away with the game early in a 35-9 blowout victory.

    1st Quarter:

The Falcons D stepped up on the opening drive, despite missing their best two linebackers with injuries, and held the Panthers to a 3 and out.

The Panthers defense would one up the effort of their Atlanta counterparts as lineback Jason Williams would intercept Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan at midfield and return it 51 yards for the score and a 7-0 Carolina lead.

    2nd Quarter:

The Falcons came right back, driving the ball into Carolina territory and was threatening to score. That's when Williams struck again and picked off Ryan at the 17 yard line and took it back 83 yards for his second pick 6 and a 14-0 Carolina lead.

After an Atlanta punt, the Panthers offense would finally see the field again midway through the 2nd quarter. After moving the ball to the 50 yard line, Newton would keep the ball on an option and rumble to the endzone for the touchdown. 21-0 Panthers

Following another interception the Panthers would have the ball near midfield again with just over a minute left in the half. Newton would find halfback Taiwan Jones deep downfield and Jones eluded two Falcon defenders and scamper into the endzone with the 47 yard touchdown. 28-0 Panthers at the half.

    3rd Quarter:

Neither team was able to muster much offense for the majority of the 3rd quarter. That is until the Panthers had the ball at midfield again with just over a minute to go in the quarter. Cam would strike again, this time on a designed keeper, as he shot through the line and cruised into the endzone with the 49 yard touchdown run. 35-0 Panthers

    4th Quarter:

The Falcons would finally get on the board early in the 4th, following a great Atlanta punt that was downed on the 1 yard line. Taiwan Jones would take a Newton pitch and get caught in the endzone for the safety. 35-2 Panthers

Atlanta would add a late touchdown, on a 37 yard Ryan pass to Roddy White, to give you the final score of 35-9.

For the 2nd week in a row, the player of the game would be the entire Panthers defense. The harassed Matt Ryan all day, intercepting him 4 times, 2 of which were returned for touchdowns, and sacking him 9 times on the day.
Good game Rod! We'll see you next year!
