The Carolina Panthers may have taken the 3-10 San Diego Chargers too lightly coming into this game, as the Panthers offense came out flat early on. The offense did finally come together for Carolina, as they scored 2 touchdowns near the end of each half to defeat the Chargers 42-28 and move to 8-6 on the season.

    1st Quarter

The Panthers offense was held to a 3 and out on their first two drives. The Chargers would also be held to a 3 and out on their first possession, but would drive down field on the 2nd.

    2nd Quarter

San Diego would cap off a long drive, that started in the 1st quarter, with a 1 yard Ryan Matthews touchdown run for the first points of the game and a 7-0 lead.

After another three and out by the Panthers, the Chargers would duplicate their last drive and drive down to the 1 yard line again. Once again, Matthews would punch it in from the 1 yard line for his 2nd touchdown and a 14-0 Chargers lead.

Each team would be held to a punt, on the next 2 possessions and Carolina would get the ball back at their own 12 yard line with just over a minute to go in the half. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton would connect on a deep pass with halfback Taiwan Jones, who would proceed to outrun the entire Charger defense and scamper into the endzone with the 88 yard touchdown. 14-7 Chargers with about a minute to go in the half.

Carolina was able to use their timeouts and force one last punt before the half. Newton capitalized on the extra possession as he connected with receiver Steve Smith streaking across the field. Smith would evade multiple defenders and streak to the endzone for the 63 yard touchdown to tie the game 14-14 at the half.

    3rd Quarter

On the opening kickoff of the 2nd half, Taiwan Jones would strike again. Jones followed some great blocks up the gut on the return, before beating the last two pursuers to the sideline and taking the ball 98 yards for the touchdown and a 21-14 Carolina lead. The return was the speedy return man's league leading 5th kickoff return for a touchdown on the season.

The Panthers would add to their lead late in the 3rd as Cam connected with receiver A.J. Green for a 15 yard touchdown. 28-14 Carolina.

    4th Quarter

The Chargers would respond right back as quarterback Philip Rivers would once again drive his team into scoring position. Rivers would connect with tight end Antonio Gates from 3 yards out to pull within a touchdown at 28-21 Carolina.

On the ensuing possession, Cam would make a costly mistake as he threw the ball right into the waiting hands of Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer. Jammer would snag the interception and return the ball 31 yards for the score, to tie the game at 28 with just under 5 minutes to go.

On the ensuing kickoff, Jones appeared to compound the problem as he brought the ball out from deep in the endzone, only to get stopped at the 12 yard line. Panthers halfback DeAngelo Williams would promptly erase that mistake, as he took a first down handoff and outran the San Diego defense for an 88 yard touchdown, once again giving the Panthers the lead at 35-28.

The Panthers defense would force another Chargers punt, giving the Panthers offense a chance to add to their lead. Cam would once again capitalize as he took a QB keeper 59 yards for the touchdown and a 42-28 Carolina lead with just under two minutes to go in the game.

Panthers cornerback Chris Gamble would intercept Rivers on the ensuing possession, to secure the victory. The interception gives Gamble 12 on the season, to tie the league lead and put him just 2 away from tying the NFL record.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton celebrates after a 59 yard touchdown run late in the 4th quarter. Newton would throw for 233 yards on the day with 3 touchdowns and an interception. He would also add 80 total yards on the ground. This game would give him over 3,000 yards passing for the season and a new career high of 23 touchdown passes, for the 2nd year passer.

The win allows the Panthers to stay alive in the NFC South race, but a Saints win next week against the Romo-less Cowboys would secure the divisional crown for New Orleans. All hope is not lost though, as the Panthers are also currently sitting in position to claim the 2nd wild card spot in the NFC. The Panthers will host the Oakland Raiders in week 16, before travelling to New Orleans to take on those Saints to close the regular season.
