The Seattle Seahawks came into their week 16 game, against the rival San Francisco 49ers, needing a victory to wrap up the NFC West Championship. A win would also keep them in the driver's seat for the #1 seed in the NFC for the post season. The Seahawks got the W they needed as they jumped out to an early lead against the Niners and never looked back, en route to a 40-21 victory. Despite the seemingly ideal weather conditions for this one, this was quite a sloppy game as neither team could hold onto the ball and both teams combined for a total of 10 turnovers on the day, on 7 fumbles and 5 interceptions. 1st Quarter The Seahawks defense struck first on the 49ers opening drive, as All-World cornerback Richard Sherman grabbed his first of 2 interceptions on the day. The Seahawks would capitialize on the turnover to take an early 3-0 lead on 48 yard Steven Hauschka field goal. Seattle would add to their lead late in the 1st quarter, as receiver Leonard Hankerson would catch his first touchdown of the season on a 10 yard pass from quarterback Russell Wilson. The 49ers would fall further behind as quarterback Colin Kaepernick was strip sacked by Seattle nickleback Tharold Simon inside his own 10 yard line. Defensive end Bruce Irvin would scoop up the loose ball and take it 6 yards for the score and a 17-0 Seattle lead to end the 1st quarter. 2nd Quarter Despite another San Francisco turnover thta gave the the Seahawks a short field to work with, it appeared as though the 49ers would finally catch a break on a 3rd down fumble by Seattle TE Luke Willson. However Seattle receiver Percy Harvin was right on top of the play, scooped up the loose ball, and returned it to the endzone for an 18 yard touchdown. Another Hauschka field goal, this one from 54 yards out, would give the Seahawks a commanding 27-0 lead midway through the 2nd quarter. The 49ers offense would capitalize on a late Seattle turnover, as halfback Marcus Lattimore would catch a 9 yard touchdown pass from Kaepernick to close out the half with the Hawks leading 27-7. 3rd Quarter The turnover bug would again bite the Seahawks on the opening possession of the 2nd half as 49ers linebacker Corey Lemonier would scoop up a Seattle fumble and return it 22 yards for the score. Suddenly just like that, San Francisco was right back in this game, trailing 27-14, just seconds into the 3rd quarter. Wilson would engineer an impressive Seattle drive that was capped off with an 11 yard touchdown pass toe Harvin. A failed 2 point conversion attempt would leave the Seahawks with a 33-14 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. Seattle would again capitalize on a San Francisco turnover, as halfback Taiwan Jones would take the handoff and find a lane for a 55 yard touchdown run, and a 40-14 Seattle lead. 4th Quarter Kaepernick would engineer an impressive drive of his own, as the 49ers marched downfield seemingly with ease, before Kaepernick connected with receiver Stephen Hill for a 24 yard touchdown pass. The Niners would get the ball back again, after holding Seattle to a 3 and out, but Sherman would get his 2nd INT of the day to officially close the book on this game. GG Alex! Looking forward to our next match-up! Ninersfan80 NOTES: With the win, Seattle is now guaranteed a first round bye, and at least one home game, in the upcoming playoffs...The Hawks (12-3) also currently hold the edge over the New York Giants (11-4) for the #1 seed in the NFC, but need a win in week 17 (or a Giants loss) to lock in the top spot...If the Seahawks fall to the rival Cardinals, and the Giants defeat the Bengals, Seattle would lose the tie breaker against the Giants due to a worse record against conference opponents...While there has been talk about the Seahawks resting their starters against the feisty Cards, that likely won't be the case as long as Seattle still has something to play for...With 115 rushing yards on the day, Seattle HB Taiwan Jones became the 3rd different Seahawks running back to rush for over 100 yards in a game this season, joining Christine Michael and Vince Kerr.
