Redskins Outlast Giants 20-17Clinton Portis rushes for 247 yards to lead Skins over G-men
Washington, DC -- The Redskins looking to avenge a earlier loss to Giants had nothing to play for. The Giants on the other hand were looking to secure a playoff spot. The elements appeared to play a big part in the game as heavy rain caused the Redskins passing game fits. However, the good news, it caused the running game to be more prominent. More prominent it was. The Redskins ended up rushing for 287 yards on the day to hand the Giants a playoff hopes crushing loss giving the Skins a 20-17 win.
The scoring started slowly as both defenses came ready to play. However, Clinton Portis, who had a huge game, scored right before the end of quarter on a dazzling 43 yard touchdown run that gave the Redskins much needed momentum. The Giants would start the second quarter moving the ball well but the drive would stall around midfield. After a punt would pin the Skins deep, Clinton Portis would once again find daylight, this time scoring from 78 yards out and 14 point lead."What more can I say? The line played great. The holes they opened up were huge. It made my job easy." said Portis.
The early lead evaporated rather quickly as the Giants put up a quick 10 points behind scoring strike to Larry Fitzgerald who had a big game in his own right picking up 5 receptions for 134 yards amd a td.
The second half saw the Redskins able to move the ball on the ground effectively but this time, the ball appeared to be covered in oil as some turnovers deep in Giants territory kepts the lead from ballooning. The skins were able to get some field to push the lead to 7 in the 3rd quarter.
In the 4th quarter, the defenses once again played bend but dont break and the a Mark Sellers fumble within the 20 with 4 minutes left gave the Giants life and they capitalized as Brandon Jacobs scored with just under 2 minutes remaining. This left the Skins with just enough time to try for the win. With the Giants expecting the pass, the Redskins went to what worked most of the game. The run. Clinton Portis was once again the work horse and he was able to get them within field goal range. With 3 second remaining Geno Graham was called on to kick the game winning field goal and thats exactly what he did from 39 yards out.
