PS: You only need one number to set the betting line. Betting lines don't list a number for each team. There is a favorite and an underdog. The (-) represent the favorite team. And if you want to do it the NFL way then you have to add 3 points to the home team.

Example: You have - Baltimore @ Cincinnati -3.5 This is saying that Cincinnati is favorite by a half point because they get 3 points for being at home. Cincinnati will have to win by 4 points to cover the spread.

Another example: You have - Tampa Bay -7 @ Carolina This means that Tampa is favorite by 10 points because Carolina gets 3 for being home. So Tampa will have to win by 8 points to cover the spread.

There are no ties in betting lines. Ties go to the house which means you lose.

I've never heard the 3 points for the home team and I gave every team odds just so there wasn't confusion for those who don't know about lines. Also going to have to disagree with you on the tie thing, I've had plenty of bets that have been a 3 point spread with a team winning by 3 and I've gotten my money back.

Getting your money back isn't winning. In gambling to tie gets you nothing. The only reason why people place bets is to gain money. The plus/minus you're using is more common when betting baseball or when they use over/under in football. Which we are not doing because you asked for winners.

Example from vegas.com - http://www2.vegas.com/gaming/gaming_tips/betting.html#football.html (the only site I can access while at work, they block gambling websites)

    Football

The point spread: When betting on football, the team you bet on must "cover the spread." This means the team must win or not lose by a predetermined margin of points.

    Example:

    Column 1
    Bet No. Team Line
    101 Jets
    102 Dolphins -6

Note: The bottom team is always listed as the home team unless otherwise noted.

The point spread is always placed to the immediate right of the team that is favored. If you bet the Dolphins, the Dolphins must win by 7 points for you to win your bet. If you bet the Jets, any of the following will declare you a winner.
    (a) The Jets win the game.
    (b) The game ends in a tie.
    (c) The Jets lose the game by not more than 6 points.

If the Dolphins win by exactly 6 points, the wager is declared a push and all money is refunded.

You previously said there are no ties in betting and the house always wins, clearly that is not your opinion now. I actually bet on games to make games I have zero interest in, more interesting. Not for the sole interest of making money.

I don't think I need vegas 101 and as stated before was doing it simply for others that might not understand it, not to be in compliance with vegas. Website still says nothing about NFL home team getting 3 points either.

You're right. I didn't distinguish myself. In casino gambling the house wins in ties but you can get a push with sports gambling. But a push isn't a win cause you only get your money back and in most cases they kept a percentage to charge you for placing the bet. Now betting with a bookie with no affiliations, rules can vary. And no matter how you put it, gambling is for making money because if you didn't care (or anyone for that matter) to make money, why place a monetary bet? And once you place a bet on any games you had no interest in, guess what happens? You get interested in the results because you do check to see if you've won or lost. Now if you do make it a habit of placing bets on games you have no interests in, you can also place bets with me (they call me Casino for a reason)! LOL

I know that website didn't. That's why I said I can't access websites that may have it because my job's servers read them as gambling sites and block them. I did find a couple examples from non gambling sites.

I think Troy said it best in saying its largely an unwritten rule but one that is very familiar to sports and gambling fans.

    Hate to keep arguing but:

No online site I've ever been a part of nor Vegas alone charges you to make a bet or charges you on a tie, hence in the event of a tie, it's even money, no money won or lost. Reason being is the payouts on line games are never 1:1 money on payouts. I bet $10 Detroit +5 and win, I get my 10 back plus the house pays $9.10. So when you win the house is not losing as much as the guy who just lost his $10 because he bet against the Detroit +5. In that example the house is up $.90 but is 50% win/loss. Multiply that by however many thousands of bets are made, there is your margin and how they make buku bucks. I know you knew this already because your name is casino.

Why place a money bet other than to "make" money? Entertainment. Win or lose it's fun to do and root for a team. Same reason you buy something like a madden game, you're spending money to be entertained, if you make money on a bet awesome but doesn't have to be the only reason why.

Now I hate to jump in here but....

That is not entirely true Fisker. Yes, you do get your money back BUT some bookies or sportsbooks charge the juice (or vig) (10 percent of your bet). Depends which sportsbook/bookie you use. Some books use 5-9 percent. Some charge more. I doubt you'll find anyone who offers anything less than five.

The juice matters a lot. If there was no juice, all you would have to do to make money is pick at 50.1 percent, which is essentially flipping a coin. With juice, however, you have to pick close to 52.5 percent, which is much more challenging. It's the same thing as casinos adding a Green 0 and 00 to the roulette table.

Let's be realistic here and realize everywhere is different. The casino's are making money regardless how the bet came out.

funny you guys are really debating on this...the big online sportsbooks only charge their juice if they win as in fisker's example. As for the whole 3 points for being home...that is just how the oddsmakers help to make the line since homefield advantage in real life actually means something--not the same for madden--further, that only matters in close spreads--and lastly the rams are gonna own you all!
