Well its finally time to kick off conference play. H4Y gets treated to two inter-conference games between Idaho/UL Lafayette and Kent State/UL Monroe. Western Michigan is also facing #2 Michigan. This week's game of the week goes to:

    UL Lafayette [IMG]@[IMG] #17 Idaho

Idaho enters week 3 catching their breath, after a close game with Oklahoma, and a lucky last second TD vs rival Boise State. Lafayette has cruised through their first two games, by a combined score of 105-24(not surprisingly). Last season, Idaho stomped UL Lafayette on their home turf 70-42. Will the Potatoe Magic continue this year in the Kibbie Tent?

    Ratings: TIE
    C+ C+
    B- B-
    C+ C+

    Offense: [IMG]

    Scoring: (52.5) (40.5)
    Yards per game
    Total: (543.8) (521.5)
    Passing: (265.5) (433.5)
    Rushing: (278) (88)

UL Lafayette's 89 overall QB Isaac Crawford has not lived up to his rating, throwing 3 TDs and 4 INTs in two games. The running game has picked up the slack however, with Meyers rushing for 271 and McNeil for 131. Idaho's Earl Walker is no Jim Rice, but he has gone for 830 yards, 8 TDs, and 7 ints. With all-american runningback Eric Johnson questionable, the Vandals will depend on Walker's arm to carry the offense.

    Defense: [IMG]

    per game
    Total: (219.5) (477.5)
    Pass: (215) (366.5)
    Rushing: (4.5) (111)

Ratings-wise Idaho has the upper-hand, but the Ragin' Cajuns have been all over their first two opponents. Giving up just 9 rushing yards in two games is incredible under any circumstances. Idaho gave up big numbers and big points to both OU and Donkey State. UL Lafayete lacks solid depth at corner though, which could be fatal against the Vandals' air attack. Idaho also has an average secondary, but the front seven could force Crawford to throw heavily, which he has not proven he can succeed with.

    Intangibles: [IMG]

Idaho spanked the Cajuns last season, and now ULL must enter the Kibbie Dome where no team is safe from Potatoe Magic. ULL is coming off a demoralizing 7-6 season, but may have new life in '18. A loss could send ULL spiralling into mediocrity for another season.

Steamer's prediction: [IMG] Idaho Vandals pull some Potatoe Magic again to start off 3-0. It won't resemble last year's 70-42 thrashing. In fact UL Lafayette will play close and may even put themselves in position to win, but Idaho gets out alive with the W.

games definitely a toss up i think, Crawford is about to get his ass sat down in favor of trey van, who went 8 TDs to 2 INTs last season despite having only an avg arm. Lou Myers might be better than Titus Cox. D has been stellar, 17 sacks in 2 games (10 last game)

MOSCOW - After trading punts on the opening possessions, the Vandals got the scoring started when QB Walker connected with receiver Marvin Martin on a 5 yard slant for a touchdown. Again stifling the Cajun offense, the Vandals had the ball back in short order. And again, they capitalized as sophomore sensation Eric Johnson punched it in from the 1 to give the Vandals a 14-0 lead after a quarter of play.

On the Cajuns' next possession, an interception gave the ball right back to the Vandals. Turning a comfortable lead into the beginnings of what looked like a repeat performance of last season's blowout victory for the Vandals, Walker again found the endzone, this time going to the other side for a 7 yard touchdown to the lone senior on the offense, Mario Tucker. At 21-0, things looked bleak for the Ragin' Cajuns. Another turnover, this one a fumble, on their next drive, and things looked even bleaker. But instead of going down and taking a four score lead, Walker misfired on a pass intended for tight end Caleb Carlson. That was the break the Cajuns needed, and along with a quarterback change, the Cajuns were able to get on the board when sophomore QB Trey Van found receiver David Perkins in the endzone to bring the game to a more manageable 21-7 margin.

Again the Vandal offense sputtered, and the Cajuns were able to work the clock to perfection, scoring with just 15 seconds left in the half to cut it to a 7 point lead.

In the 3rd quarter, the Vandals came out and marched the ball all the way down to the one yardline. Feeling good about his defense, Coach Full Moon Fever elected to go for the touchdown on 4th and goal from the 1. ULL had other plans, as the defense responded with a big stop to force the turnover on downs. But there was a quick turn of events, as on the next play, defensive tackle RJ Johnson got one of his two sacks, this one a safety. 28 seconds later, Marvin Martin hauled in his second score of the day, this one a 42 yard bomb as he was able to get behind the ULL secondary. When The Islander scored on a 7-yard run up the middle, the Vandals found themselves entering the final stanza with a comfortable 37-14 lead.

The 4th quarter saw a lot of fireworks, as the teams alternated touchdowns with 5 combined touchdowns scored in a span of about 3 minutes.

Keys to the win for the Vandals

    1. Pass protection. Despite a few letdowns in the running game, the Idaho offensive line didn't give up a single sack despite heavy blitzing from the Ragin' Cajun defense.

    2. Defense. The defense set the tone early, forcing the Ragin' Cajuns into a 3-and-out on the opening drive of the game, and forcing 5 turnovers while giving up a paltry .81 yards per rush.

    3. Potato Magic. You just can't explain it any other way. In the 3rd quarter, Walker threw an interception on the goalline, but the defender fumbled the ball back to the Vandals after a short return, and the Vandals had a 1st and 10 inside the 20 yardline. A few plays later, The Islander punched it in for the score.
Next up, the Vandals travel to Tucson to take on the basketball school that still has the best team in the state, the Arizona Wildcats.

The Ragin' Cajuns have a week off to reevaluate things before welcoming the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky into Lafayette.
