Week 3 is headlined by a match-up of two of the best defenses in the league over the first two weeks of the season. The Panthers currently allow the second fewest points in the league (21) while the Giants rank sixth (33). The Giants stumbled in Week 1 against the Cowboys, but both of these teams expect to compete for their division titles and to be playing football in January. That makes this an intriguing match-up in Week 3.
    Last Week
The Giants rebounded from a rough start against the Cowboys with a dominant performance against Tampa Bay in Week 2. The Giants' defense forced seven turnovers and held the Bucs' offense scoreless (the only score was a safety in the first quarter).
Carolina was able to narrowly edge the Saints in Week 2 to improve to 2-0. The Panthers' offense sputtered and was only able to manage 199 yards of offense. However, they held New Orleans to 259 yards of offense and won the turnover battle 2-to-1 which helped them secure the win.
    Keys to the Game
The Panthers have to find some offense. They currently rank 29th in the league at only 217 yards per game. Cam Newton has been efficient (108.3 QB rating) but has struggled on 3rd down (36%). The running game has also been sporadic.
The Giants haven't fared much better offensively (259 YPG/25th) as a team. Eli Manning has been inconsistent (74.5 QBR) and his 12% conversion rate on 3rd down is third worst in the league. The running game has had it's moments but the Giants are going to go as Eli goes.
    What to Watch
The quarterbacks. This game is going to come down to whoever gets the better play from their QB. Both of these defenses can be dominant, so whichever QB is able to find a rhythm will be the key to who gets the W in this one.

    Prediction
Based upon common opponents, the Giants have the more impressive win. However, the Panthers have home field advantage and the experience of winning close games (average win is 5 points in 2012). This is one of those games that could go either way but I think the Giants have their backs to the wall and do not want to fall to 1-2. For that reason, I think the G-men will come out with a hard fought 17-14 win.
    Week 3 Player to Watch
Calvin Johnson, WR Detroit Lions woodsmall
Johnson has recorded just eight catches for 98 yards and zero touchdowns through two weeks of the season. That is a far cry from his 100 yards per game prediction prior to the season. The Lions are 0-2 and need their playmaker to step up and carry them to a victory.
