The Carolina Panthers defeated the host, and NFC South rival, Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a rain soaked game at Raymond James Stadium.
Neither team was able to put up a whole lot of yards in the sloppy conditions, as both offenses had trouble getting things going in the passing game as well as the running attack.
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton would overcome a swarming Buccaneers defense, who sacked Newton 3 times and picked him off twice, to keep the Panthers alone atop the NFC South a quarter of the way into the season.
The Panthers move to 4-0 on the season and hope to keep things going in an attempt to secure that long elusive playoff berth at season's end.

    1st Quarter:

The Panthers would score first in this one, capitalizing on a fumble by Tampa halfback LeGarrette Blount, as quarterback Cam Newton would run the ball through the heart of the Buccaneers defense for a 9 yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

    2nd Quarter:

The Panthers would add to their lead early in the 2nd quarter, as halfback Taiwan Jones would run it in from 3 yards out and a 14-0 Carolina lead.

Carolina would further increase their lead, with just under a minute to go in the half, as Newton connected with rookie receiver Patrick Wilkerson for a 7 yard touchdown pass. 21-0 Carolina

In an attempt to get some momentum going before the half, the Tampa offense would attempt to move the ball down field. An interception by the Carolina defense, in Tampa Bay territory, would allow the Panthers to attempt to add to their lead before the half. Carolina would capitalize on the opportunity as Newton connected with tight end Ben Watson for a 1 yard touchdown pass and a 28-0 halftime lead.

    2nd Half:

Tampa Bay would put together a quality drive and get on the board late in the 3rd quarter, on a 5 yard touchdown run by halfback Doug Martin, to cut the Panthers lead to 28-7.

The Buccaneers would not give up in this one, but a bend but don't break approach by the Carolina defense, along with grind it out clock eating play calling from the Panthers offense, kept the Tampa offense at bay for the rest of the game.

    Final:
    Buccaneers - 7
    Panthers - 28

The Panthers return to Carolina in week 5 to host yet another division rival, their 2nd in a 3 week stretch, as coach Rod and his always tough Atlanta Falcons come to town.
