The Carolina Panthers came into their week 4 match-up against the division rival Atlanta Falcons knowing they had their work cut out for them against this tough Falcons team in their home confines of the Georgia Dome. The Panthers high scoring offense was largely shut down by the smothering Falcons defense, but Carolina relied on other facets of their game to get a key win against this tough division rival.

The Falcons took it to the Panthers early on as they jumped out to a 7-0 1st quarter lead on a 33-yard touchdown run by Atlanta halfback Michael Turner. The Falcons would increase their lead to 14-0, following an interception of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, as receiver Roddy White would haul in an 18-yard Matt Ryan pass in the back of the endzone early in the 2nd quarter.

The Panthers would capitalize in a muffed punt return by the Falcons, where the Atlanta returner signaled for a fair catch only to have the ball bounce right off of his hands, but would only manage a field goal to cut the Falcons lead to 14-3 with just over 2 minutes to go in the half.

The muffed fair catch would be just the first of a string of huge plays that would swing the momentum back and forth in just the remainder of the 1st half.

The turnover and subsequent field goal appeared to swing momentum in Carolina's favor as the Panthers defense held the Falcons to a three and out, giving Cam Newton and company a chance to further cut into the lead Falcons lead with just over a minute to go. The feeling was short lived in this moment as Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes jumped in front of a Newton pass and returned it 17 yards for the score and the 21-3 Atlanta lead.

With just 27 seconds left on the clock, the Panthers appeared to have dug themselves an even deeper hole for a second half comeback attempt. That is until Carolina's electric kick returner Taiwan Jones fielded the kickoff 3 yards deep in the endzone. Fresh off a week 3 performance where he had two 100+ yard kick return touchdowns, Jones would find a lane and streak to the endzone for his 3rd kick return touchdown in the last two games to cut the Falcons lead to 21-10 with just seconds remaining in the half.

Following a touchback on the ensuing kickoff, and knowing the Panthers would receiver the ball in the 2nd half, the Falcons decided to take a shot down field. This decision proved costly as young Panthers nickle cornerback Josh Norman made a great play on a Ryan pass to pick it off and returned it 49 yards to the endzone to put the Panthers within one score at 21-17 going into the half.

After the excitement of the 2nd quarter, the 3rd quarter saw both teams buckle down on defense and neither team scored in the quarter.

Early in thew 4th, the Panthers seemed to be trapped against their own endzone; following a false start penalty, they were facing a 3rd and very long. That was when Cam finally made his mark on this game, as he found receiver Louis Murphy running accross the middle of the field and connected with him on a 90-yard catch and run for the touchdown and the 24-21 lead.

The Falcons offense seemed to come unglued at the seams as Ryan would throw two 4th quarter interceptions, be sacked multiple times, and even phenomenal young receiver Julio Jones would drop a wide open pass that would have kept a drive alive. The Panthers would capitalize on the Falcons miscues and add another touchdown, on a 5 yard run by DeAngelo Williams, as well as another Mare field goal for your final score of 34-21.

Great game Rod! I feel lucky to have escaped with the win, your defense was scary good!
