    Stanford 31-27 USC

Late Score Lifts Cardinal Over Trojans
    in Pac-10 Opener

Braylon Ingram and Jamaal Tyson celebrate the 1st of Ingram's 3 touchdowns

After a road test at New Mexico and a cakewalk in their home opener, Stanford welcomed the 15th ranked USC Trojans to town this week for the Cardinal’s Pac-10 opener and biggest test yet. On paper, Stanford didn’t stand a chance, but as they say, “that’s why they play the games.â€ÂÂ

Stanford kicked off to start the game. USC came out and moved the ball with several solid runs by star running back Marc Tyler. Unfortunately, SC would lose Tyler for the game with a bruised sternum and he would finish with 32 yards on just 6 carries. After the Trojans marched into Cardinal territory, quarterback Nick Smith would try to hit Marc Tyler on a corner route, but freshman safety Elliott McCoy would win their one-on-one battle and come away with his 1st collegiate interception. Stanford would then respond with an impressive drive that culminated with Player of the Game Braylon Ingram scoring the 1st of his 3 touchdowns from the 2 yardline to give Stanford a 7-0 lead with 2:36 to play in the opening quarter. USC would answer with a 2:00 drive when Smith successfully hit Ayles from the 1 yardline on a play-action pass to knot the score at 7-7 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Elliott McCoy intercepts a pass intended for USC tight end Marc Tyler

In the 2nd quarter, the going would get tougher for Stanford as they’d be held to a field goal for the quarter. Stanford was able to put together a couple solid plays on their drive after the Ayles’ touchdown, but the drive would stall at the Trojan 23 yardline and David Green would come on to put Stanford up 10-7 with 4:35 to play in the half. 3 plays and :53 later, USC had their 1st lead of the game when Smith hit wideout Bryce Butler who beat the press coverage and ran away from the Cardinal secondary. After both teams failed to score on their next possessions, Stanford had the ball in the waning moments of the 1st half, looking to take a halftime lead, or getting to within 1 point of the Trojans. Reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week and Evo-Heisman Trophy candidate Andrew Luck completed 3 passes to get Stanford to the USC 25 yardline, but with :25 left and no timeouts, Luck took a sack and Green’s 50-yard attempt on the last play of the half came up just short. The score at the break had USC ahead 14-10.

Stepfan Taylor’s big 1st quarter run setup Ingram’s touchdown

The 3rd quarter was a continuation of the 2nd with both defenses containing the opposition’s offense. Freshman corner, Corey Wright would make a nice interception to end the Trojans’ 1st drive of the half as he would wrestle the ball away from Trojans tight end Ayles, his 2nd of the season. Stanford would then drive down and Luck, who helped his campaign by throwing for 352 yards and 1 touchdown, found Usua Amanam through a small window in the Trojan coverage after he broke free from star corner TJ Bryant’s press coverage to put Stanford up 17-14. The home crowd’s joy and Stanford’s lead would be short lived though, as Smith would once again hook up with Butler :43 later for a 56-yard touchdown to reclaim the lead at 21-17. Butler was Smith’s favorite target on the day, catching 6 of Smith’s 15 completions for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns en route to earning Player of the Game honors for the Trojans.

    Corey Wright’s 3rd quarter interception

After a punt and a defensive stop, Stanford would go ahead for the 4th time on the day when Ingram would score his 2nd touchdown of the day from inside the 1 yardline to put Stanford up 24-21. USC would answer again, but not on a big play this time as they would drive down the field in 1:30 when Smith would throw his 4th touchdown of the day, hitting Brandon Carswell on a 9-yard slant with 2:04 to play and USC appeared headed for the victory and a 1-0 record in the Pac-10. Stanford, however, had other ideas. Luck would lead the Cardinal on an 11 play 79-yard drive that took 1:49 off the clock to win the game. Luck would hook up with JR Patterson a couple times, freshman tight end Ben Hill, and Ingram out of the backfield when he didn’t have time to connect with his receivers further down the field. Ingram scored his 3rd touchdown of the day from the 1 yardline to put Stanford ahead for good with just :15 to play. USC would complete 2 passes to get to midfield, but Smith’s Hail Mary was batted down with no time left on the clock and Coach Alexander had his 1st signature win as the Stanford head coach.
Stanford improved to 1-0 in the Pac-10 and 3-0 overall. Next week, the Cardinal will host the Pac-10 leading Washington State Cougars who are on a 2-game winning streak after beating the New Mexico Lobos 35-30 this week.

Washington State beats New Mexico State in a great game. First play of the game Wsu some how gets an int. The game was back and forth as neither defense really could do much at all. The key play of the game was the int to seal the 35-30 victory.

    WMU Rushes Toledo in Overtime

~Western Michigan came into the Glass Bowl against Toledo with a new coach on the sidelines. One thing coach Cimmy learned from this experience....throwing the football isn't going to be easy with an inaccurate QB. The Broncos focused on pounding the football with HBs Winchester and Scrivens, with Winchester leading the way. WMU would take a 35-27 lead with 1:40 left. Toledo would get the ball and would make an unreal drive down the field and convert a controversial 2-point conversion to send it to OT. In OT, WMU would win the toss and elected to send Toledo's offense on the field first. 3 and out for the Rockets. The field goal attempt...WIDE LEFT! WMU would get the ball and pound the rock with Aaron Winchester, who would eventually put it in from 6 yards out, giving WMU a huge MAC win and the first win for coach Cimmy on the sidelines. Next up for WMU, a home game against the mighty Akron Zips.

Auburn holds on to beat #3 Florida

Flordia came into Jordan-Hare stadium and expected to roll by the Tigers, who have a couple early stuggles against Colorado State and crushing loss to the Central Mich. Chippewas. But Auburn rebounded those 2 early losses to put together its first winning streak under coach T2 Express.

Flordia took the ball and quickly gave it back to Auburn after a 3 and out. Unfortunately Auburn could not move the ball past midfield and settled for punting the ball away. FLA star Chris Rainy got the first TD of the game on a 7yard pass over the middle. Auburn quickly responded went their fastest man H. Adams caught a pass over the middle and broke lose for the 45yard TD catch.. 7-7 It would take FLA only 13 seconds and 2 plays to reply back to the Auburn TD when O. Hines caught a 66yd pass. Auburn would stutter on its next drive and punt the ball away to FLA who would be turned away in a huge defensive stand on the goal line. Settled for 3.. 17-7. Things looked grim for the Tigers, until TB Onterio McCalebb was able to find the endzone after Auburn left the passing and decided to run up the middle. 17-14. Again FLA wasted no time in scoring. taking 50 seconds to add another 7pts. 24-14. Auburn would find its star WR D. Winter for 69yards on 3rd and 13 down the left hash.. 24-21. Auburn would halt a last second throw by Brantley into the endzone forcing the games only Turnover by SS Cole.

    2nd Half..

Auburn got the ball to start and marched the ball down the field to take its first lead of the game 24-28. Florida would retake its lead with 1:27 seconds left in the 3rd on a 3yard run by Brantley. Auburn wasted little time driving down the field to recapture the lead 31-35 on a Douglas 4yrd run. Flordia got the ball back and stopped on a 4th and 1 when the entire left side jumped offsides, forcing FLA to punt with 4:06 left in the 4th. Auburn got the ball on the 21yard line and began a march down the field. Using a combonation of the Triple option Auburn ate up time and yardage. When AUB got to midfield the Gators got AUB into a 4th and IN on the 50.. with 2:43 remaining Coach T2 left it in the hands of his FB to blow through and keep the offense on the field. AUB got a 4yard run and kept the clock moving. Again when Auburn got down to the FLA 35 a 4th and 1 came up. With a poor kicker Aub had no choice but to try to get the first down. Again Douglas got the 1 yard but it wasnt by much. with Fla out of Timeouts Auburn ran the ball down to the 6 yard line and let the game end. 35-31.

    Louisiana Tech @ #23 Nevada

Last year Nevada lost by 7 points at the hands of Tech, mainly from turnovers. Nevada threw 4 int's and fumbled the ball once. LTU was able to capitalize on these errors with dominant field position throughout the game. Coach Jvig took note of this and worked his team hard on being more efficient in the pass game.

In the first QTR it appeared that Tech was swinging for the fences. The Wolfpack defense was able to regain composure and stop the offense of Tech for a FG. Then Nevada drove down the field and got on the board with a 10 yard run with JR RB J.Fogerson.

    7-3 Nevada

    2nd QTR

LTU gets on the board again with a 22 yard pass for the TD. On the ensuing kickoff Nevada fumbles the ball and it gets recovered by LTU for the TD!
Nevada naswers with a 6 yard TD pass from SR QB C.Louks to Soph TE K.Jackson. The Wolfpack defense shuts down LTU and Nevada drives down the field again for a TD run by Fogerson. With 41 seconds remaining before the half LTU tries to throw a deep pass down the sideline only for it to be intercepted by the hovering FS. With good field position Nevada gets a FG with 0 seconds left.

    24-17 Nevada

    3rd QTR

JR RB M.Ball runs around the tackle from 24 yards for the TD. Nevada gets on the board again with a FG.

    34-17 Nevada

    4th QTR

LTU scores on a 5 yard pass for the TD. Nevada seals the game when J.Fogerson busts a 75 yard TD run.
