GOLDEN BEARS DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS SHINE ONCE AGAIN OVER ZONA CB Martin Burton pick six stunned Arizona and gave the Golden Bears the momentum early The Golden Bears faced off against Arizona to open up the conference slate. Both teams entered the contest with 2-1 records and an eagerness to lock down their first conference win. The matchup would be the first meeting between Coach IrishBearcat and Coach XAttackConquerX with the Zona ball coach leading the team in his first season as Head Coach. Arizona's offense took the field first. Zona QB Kevin Gray was cited by Coach IrishBearcat as one of the biggest threats they would face during the game. The pass defense struggled immensely against Alabama's attack and many experts felt Gray could do some damage. Their first offensive drive ended with Gray throwing a pass right into the hands of reserve CB Martin Burton who raced into the end-zone for a touchdown. Up 7-0 Cal's defense would fail to stop the Wildcat's offense. Gray rebounded by hitting TE Matt Thomas on a crossing pattern for a touchdown. Cal's backup QB Josh Martin fumbled on a 3rd and 1 and Arizona recovered. The Golden Bears defense stiffened and forced a punt. KR/RB Brenton Smith broke a tackle and made a beautiful cut down field to advance the punt all the way for a touchdown! Cal lead 14-7 at the end of the first. Brenton Smith's punt return marked his third return TD of the season (+2 KR TDs) The defenses dominated the second quarter. The only points of the quarter were scored by the Golden Bears. On third and long QB Seth Fritz hit WR Matt Daly wide open on a corner route. The defense tracked him down and shoved him out of bounce at the 4 yard line. The next play Fritz connected with TE John Clarke on an out route for a touchdown. Cal lead 21-7 at halftime. The luck for the Wildcats did not improve in the second half. Cal opened the half with a big KR from Brenton Smith. The offense stalled and K Justin Sledge added a field goal to go up 24-7. QB Gray forced another pass into the gut of LB Marcus Jackson. The very next play Cal ran a draw with RB Shaun Young who took it 12 yards for a touchdown. After the Golden Bear D forced a punt, backup QB Josh Martin redeemed himself for his fumbled by take a read option play right up the gut for a 36 yard touchdown while showing off his speed. RB Brenton Smith added another touchdown in the third quarter to give California a 45-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Arizona put a very good drive together right before the end of the game and built some much-needed momentum for their squad entering next week. Cal won the ball game 45-14. The amazing stat was Cal's offense only outgained Arizona's by 55 yards, but still was able to win by 31 points. GG XAttackConquerX , we know Arizona will be ready for revenge next season in Tuscon.
