Bruins Late Push Allows a Winning Escape In a game of similar offenses, the Jim Mora Jr led UCLA Bruins would travel to Arizona to play Rich Rodriguez and the Wildcats of UA. The 15th ranked Bruins had a chance to start the season 5-0, a first in the Mora Dynasty. The Wildcats came in at 2-1 and not a scuff from the PAC-12 yet in the young season. The first half saw many drives come and go without a fuss. With a heavy passing offense, and solid defenses, both teams found themselves inching down the field, usually held short just within enemy territory. The Wildcats were the first to break that trend, with an early Garic Wharton touchdown with 3:13 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Jerry Rice Jr and Brett Hundley would answer in the second quarter, from 17 yards out. The Wildcats were the first team involved to have back-to-back successful drives, this a near mirror of the last, punching it in from 4 yards out just a little more than a minute later. 14-7 Wildcats with 3:32 in the Second Quarter. After taking their drive past the 2-minute mark, Hundley would find Jerry Rice Jr again able to take a tie into the half. That minute and a half remaining would be tricky though, as the Arizona offense would run a Draw against the unexpected Bruins defense, enough to push them forward to a 25 yard pass from Tyler Slavin to Jovon Henderson to end the half, Wildcats with the 21-14 lead. A slow third quarter, rather uneventful, would end with a UCLA game-tying touchdown when Freshman Richard Townsend would catch a 16 yard pass in the front corner of the endzone. And just as it picked up at the end, it died down in the fourth. For 5 minutes, neither team scored, and instead made it a battle of possession and field position. HB Daniel Jenkins would be on the receiving end of a screen pass, taking it 40 yards and in for the touchdown, 28-21 Wildcats. 2:07 remaining, it would take a little under a minute for a 7 play 2-minute drill for Hundley to throw a 47 yard touchdown pass to tie it up, leaving a lot of time on the clock for a rather ruthless Arizona offense. With average field position, Arizona would get a quick first down only to end the drive with three consecutive incompletions, forcing them to punt with 45 seconds left. Hundley with a key pocket prescence was able to take the Bruins down to the 35 yard line, calling upon his kicker to win the game. Fairbairn wouldn't be shaken by a Rich Rod timeout, and would knock it through the uprights to allow the Bruins to escape Arizona with a win, and go 5-0(2-0) on the season.
