    Week 7: 49ers (23) @ Panthers (35)

    Charlotte, NC- Pepper Hicks Reporting

The Panthers improved to 4 - 2 with a big win over the 49ers. Again it was a rainy game in Charlotte and the 49ers kept losing people due to injuries on defense throughout the game. Most notable were Parys Haralson and Justin Smith. Those injuries and the heavy rain had a huge impact and the Panthers came through scoring a season high 35 points.

Panthers started with the ball first and got the scoring started with a 39 yard touchdown run by DeAngelo Williams. A Chris Gamble INT would give the ball back to the Panthers late in the 1st and Panthers extend their lead after DeAngelo powers his way into the endzone from 2 yards out with 1 sec left in the 1st Quarter. Then Ted Ginn proceeded to take the kickoff untouched 96 yards to put his team back in the game.

Panthers following drive you could feel the momentum shifting to the 49ers. Matt Moore through a terrible pass right to William James. With the ball back and good field position, the 49ers took advantage and evened up the game at 14 with a Frank Gore 11 yard TD run. The 9ers forced the Panthers to punt on their next position and almost added another TD but the Panthers D held strong and the 49ers had to settle for a 21 yard FG. With under 2 minutes before the half, Panthers went into their 2 minute drill. Matt Moore led his team down the field and then found Steve Smith in the endzone on a busted play from 12 yards out. Smith made a incredible one handed grab to secure the TD for his team. Half Time Panther led 21 to 17.

To start the 2nd half the 49ers pushed into Panthers territory but had to once again settle for a 52 yard FG by Joe Nedney. Panthers responded and rather quickly a few plays later DeAngelo once again found pay-dirt, this time with a 19 yard run. The 49ers next drive would take them 5 minutes as they would find away to convert those 3rd downs, something that has been the Achilles Heel for this Panthers Defense over the past couple for seasons. Fortunately the Panthers managed to finally stop the 49ers and Joe Nedney put home his 3rd FG of the day this time from 36 yards.

This almost a whole quarter left to play the Panther held on to a 5 point lead 28 to 23. 49ers Defense would then give their team a chance to win the game when Takeo Spikes made a great athletic play to pick off Matt Moore and give his offense a chance to take the lead. A few plays later and the Panthers D re-paid the favor when Chris Gamble collected his 2nd INT of the game. Panthers then turned to DeAngleo once again, needing him to churn out some yards and keep the clock moving. Thats just what he did picking up decent yards until breaking a 69 yard TouchDown run with 3 minutes left to play.

The Panthers held on and won the game 35 to 23, improving their record to 4-2 as they seek for their first playoff appearance in the OMFL. DeAngelo Williams was the player of the game with 160 yards and 4 TD's on 19 carries. Matt Moore had a efficient game throwing 13 completions on 19 attempts for 221 yards and 1 TD, but did throw 2 ints. Gamble and the Panthers LB's carried the Defense. The Panthers Line-backing core accounted for 13 of the 27 tkls the defense made and in doing so held Frank Gore to just 56 yards on 18 carries.

Next week the Panthers travel to St.Louis to take on the undefeated Rams who are averaging 38 points a game through the first 6 weeks of the season. Though the total record of those 6 teams he's played is 10-28 and still is due to play the 1-4 Buccaneers on Friday. So the Panthers will hope to be the team that can ruin the Rams undefeated season.

    Game blacked out. No replay.
