TCU Fails To Impress in 27-14 Win Over Iowa State

If you were to glance at the box score of this one, you never would have guessed that it was a 13 point TCU win. The Frogs were outgained 200-11 in the first quarter, yet were just tied at 7-7 thanks to a pick 6 and a big fourth down goal line stand. TCU was missing starting HB Heath Noel, and freshman backup Walter Brooks failed to get anything going early, yet after the Frogs defense decided to show up in the 2nd quarter, TCU went to half time leading 10-7. Maybe the lack of a running game had an impact on usually reliable QB Jack King, who looked lost, completing just 5 of his 18 pass attempts and throwing 2 INTs, the 2nd coming deep in Iowa State territory and led to a go ahead TD for the Cyclones. Trailing 14-10, King would not get another chance. Enter the hero of the day, freshman Shaun Gilmore. Gilmore went 2 for 2 on his first drive in the game, which was capped off by a short Brooks TD run. The following drive, freshman Gilmore tossed to freshman Brooks on an quick option play, and Brooks went untouched 83 yards for the game deciding TD. A late INT and FG pushed the lead to 13, where it would stay.

    Jack King; 5 of 18, 90 yards, 2 INTs
    Shaun Gilmore; 2 of 3, 36 yards, 5 carries, 12 yards
    Walter Brooks,; 20 carries,127 yards, 2 TDs

    First Downs; 17 (ISU) - 7 (TCU)
    Total Offense; 353 (ISU) - 262 (TCU)
    Turnovers; 4 (ISU) - 2 (TCU)
