    A PSU BLOG
What a crazy summer its been in State College PA. With all the turmoil surrounding former coaching Legend Joe Paterno and his staff people have not been focused on the Nittany Lion Football team and the upcoming season. While some have been clamoring for the death penalty and the resignation of the Board of Trustees, Coaching Staff, and the Athletics Director the school has been going about things "business as usual". This off season the school put together a council to go out and find a new head coach. No one wanted to be the guy who follows "THE GUY". They knocked on doors, left voice mails, searched social media, called in favors hell the head of the search committee personally flew to Arkansas to talk to Bobby Petrino (after the accident) to talk him into the job. To no avail no on wanted the position. "I think it was a thursday in late July when my phone rang. On the other end was this cocky brash young man by the name of Matt York. He said he was from Louisville KY and he had extensive knowledge about the game from playing video games and that he was perfect for the job. I of course laughed told him "thanks but no thanks" hung up and ordered lunch. Thank God I have caller ID because little did I know after all the searching and talking to former head coaches, current head coaches and the like that nobody wanted the job. I was stuck hiring this virtual unknown to run one of the most storied universities in all of college athletics." said Matt Millen head of the search committee. So now it is Matt Yorks team he has big shoes to fill a community to lift up and a team that has some glaring holes in its roster thanks to the former regime. This is a PSU Blog we will bring you all of the info you need to keep yourself up to date on the goings on in Happy Valley. Welcome to The Lions Dens Lets GO PENN STATE!!

Penn State Offense Will be Ground and Pound

Over the next couple of days we will break down the roster and give you an in depth look at what your Lions will look like this fall. Penn State will look to a very SR laden back field for its leadership. Leading the team will be SR QB Matt McGloin. As the starter at QB coming out of spring and early on in fall practice McGloin has been scheduling 7-7 drills and getting the underclassmen ready for fall practice. He has been the on again off again starter for the Lions for 2 seasons. Last Year he threw for 1571 yards with 8 TD's and 5 INT's. McGloins back up will be RS SO Paul Jones. Jones is a very gifted athlete who has the size and the speed to be called a Dual Threat. At 6'3" and 246lbs he can be a hand full once he crosses the line of scrimmage. Jones has got to get his head on straight as he has been in academic troubles his 1st two years on campus if he can do this he should challenge McGloin for the starting position. Whoever is at QB he will be handing the ball off to JR RB and 1st team All Big 10 Silas Redd. In Redds 1st year as starting tailback he rushed for 1241 yards (10th best in school history) at on point in October he was leading the nation after 5 straight 100 yard games. Redd is backed up by big bruiser 6'1" 242lb JR Curtis Dukes. Dukes rushed for 237 yards last year. At 5.5 yards a carry he was a load to bring down. Leading the way again for Redd and Co will be SR FB Michael Zordich a wide load who saw the field in all 11 games last year but touched the ball only 8 times 2 of which went for TD's. The OL will be a work in progress as they see three new starters and 5 new backups that have seen little to no time on the field. The receiving corps brings back 3 starters and several guys that made catches. Leading the way is SR Justin Brown. Brown enters the season with 1047 yards receiving in his career good for 20th on the all time PSU list. One that has impressed early on in fall practice is the speedy FR Eugene Lewis. At TE, a position that has been overlooked in the past but will factor in a lot with Coach York, are JR's Garry Gil and Kevin Haplea who have been asked to block for most of their PSU career will now be roaming the middle of the field making catches and keeping the LB's busy. Next week we will look at the Penn State Defense.

    Coaching Change Brings Defensive Change
Change its what PSU fans have to get used too. No longer will this be your parents Nittany Lions for that matter your grandparents Nittany Lions as there will be a new coach on the sideline new OC and DC in the booths and a new outlook on the program. The Players are the same the schemes have changed. Linebacker U goes from a 4-3 to a Multiple Defense you will see us come out in a 3-4, 3-3-5 sometimes a 5-2. "We plan on taking advantage of the talent we have at Linebacker. We have some good Safeties but not much depth in the secondary. We need to put pressure on the QB from the Mike and Sam position." said Coach York when asked why he switched up the Defensive Style. "We will play a lot of zone look to blitz out of that zone and at times put up to 5 hands on the ground to get into the backfield make the other team throw into coverage." added York. Leading the LB's is SR Michael Mauti and JR Glenn Carson both 2 year starters. Mauti is team captain but Carson is the leader on the field calling all the plays. Michael Yanich and Gerald Hodges are returning letterman and both can get after the QB Hodges will play a lot this year with his hand on the ground. The secondary is lead by talented SO Adrian Amos a freshman AA last year. Amos lead the team in INT's and the secondary in tackles. Speedy Stephon Morris is a crafty veteran who will be asked to cover the other teams top Wide Out. The rest of the CB's will be a rotation of young 1st timers. The DL is talented but few have seen much playing action. Sean Stanley and Jordan Hill are the only returning Letterman but RS FR Deion Barnes turned a lot of heads during spring ball and will be asked to step up and start come fall. Overall this D is going to be a work in progress they have talent but a lot will be asked of some young players. If guys step up this defense will confuse a lot of Big 10 teams the scheme is not what fans that have traveled to Happy Valley for the past 40 years are used too but then again a change can be good for the soul.

    White Out=Shut Out

The fans showed up not knowing what to think. They came in their White Shirts umbrellas in tow. Some had memories of the past on them some had thoughts on the future. All came to cheer on their favorite team even though it poured outside. I overheard someone say "The rain was like all the tears shed over the children who suffered because of prideful men.". State College needed this weekend after such a tough summer in which a lot of fans and alumni had to look in the mirror and realize the man they idolized, their fearless leader was a liar and a hypocrite. The 1st three Qtrs of the game were gut wrenching the offense sputtered waisted several chances to score and at the start of the 4th thanks to the Defense and takeaways led only 7-0. The Oline had given up 6 sacks and new QB SO Paul Jones was pressured multiple times. But as the rain weakened at the start of the 4th the offense started to click. "I think all the work we put in this summer started to pay off. We left the huddle with a sense that we knew our responsibilities where to be what to do. It took us a couple of Qtrs but we got it." said Jones. Jones had his 1st start at QB in his troubled PSU career. He threw for 202 yards on 14/22 throwing and 2 TD passes. His main target was SR WR Devon Smith who hat 6 catches for 132 yards. One of those catches was a 79 yard TD grab where Smith ran by the Ohio Secondary to give the Nittany Lions the lead. RB Silas Redd lead the team on the ground with 132 yards on 24 carries and 1 TD. One of the big questions going into the season was how would this defense fair with its new scheme. After game one I would say it is going to be an entertaining season. CB's Curtis Drake (2) and Stephon Morris (1) combined for 3 INT's which were 3 of the 5 TO's the defense caused. The DL did not get a lot of pressure getting only 2 sacks but the takeaways made up for this giving the offense good field position. The team looks to head to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers next week. We will get a look at our recruiting efforts over the next couple of days.

Who The F is Perry Jones?
You may ask yourself that question if you haven't heard about todays game in Charlottesville. Perry Jones destroyed the Penn States Defense. He ran up and down the field today to the tune of 271 yards and 1 score. He could not be stopped even when he was stopped he broke free of 250lb LB's, he threw 280lb DE's to the curb , and he juked his way past Safetys putting on a display that Wahoo fans have not seen since Tiki Barber put on pads at Scott Stadium. The game was full of scoring on both sides. PSU fans saw an offense that looked anemic in week one and came out firing once the 2nd qtr started. Leading the way for the O was QB Paul Jones who completed 19 of 28 passes for 236 yards and two TD's. His main man again was WR Devon Smith who had 7 catches for 152 yards and both scores. Silas Redd had another good game rushing for just under 100 yards and 1 score. It was good to see SO RB Curtis Dukes finnaly get on track as he had 7 touches for 66 yards and a TD. The coaches go back to the drawing board because next week Clemson brings Andre Ellington and Cole Stoudt to Happy Valley. Both are very capable runners who can go the distance any time they touch the ball.

    Immaculate Reception II

Well fans of Pennsylvania sports and Pittsburgh Steelers fans for sure know about Franco Harris's catch in the 1972 AFC playoff game on a tipped pass that he picked up before it hit the ground. It was and is considered the greatest play in NFL history. Well the play that Nittany Lions fans saw today should go down as just as amazing as Harris's catch. On 3rd and short at the start of the 3rd qtr Clemson QB Cole Stoudt executed the PA pass and threw to an open FB in the flat who had the ball bounce off his hands as he was tackled short of the 1st down. A heady play by SS Steven ObengAgayapong who tackled the FB causing the ball to come out. "If that ball hits the ground we punt. We are still leading 13-3 and we still have the momentum." said Clemson Coach franko05 after the game. For PSU fans sake it didn't hit the ground just before touching tera firma LB Glenn Carson snatched the ball out of the air and preceded to run it back for 6 points. "It looked from the sidelines like a fumble. I was about to send the punt team out and turned my back to the play when everyone started cheering." Said Coach York in his post game press conference. "Two Pick 6's who would of thought this D was capable of that after Virginia stomped on us last week. It just goes to show that these kids are resilient." added Coach York. He of course was also referring to CB Curtis Drake's late pick in the red zone that he took back 86 yards for the deciding score late in the 4th. Clemson had another shot with just over 3 min left in the game Stoudt put together a drive that got down to 4th and goal from the 3 inch mark only to have a tackle move for a 5 yard false start penalty. Stoudt was sacked on the next play and PSU took over and never looked back. RB Silas Redd was the top offensive player today for the Lions as he had 125 yards on the ground on 11 carries. QB Paul Jones had 117 yards passing on 9 completions most importantly he had no turn overs. PSU heads into a bye week then the Big 10 schedule starts with a Illinois. 3 Star DT James Newton gave his verbal commitment to PSU over the weekend. He is from Williamsport PA and is rated the #41 best DT in the country.

Penn State Opens Big 10 Play With Win
    [IMG]

PSU opened its Big 10 schedule on the road this weekend facing a tough Illinois team. The Defense stepped up and INT 5 passes on the day and RB Silas Redd ran all over the field to the tune of 177 yards and two scores. JR RB Curtis Dukes and SR Derrick Day chipped in with 88 and 43 yards respectively. While QB Paul Jones took his lumps throwing two costly INT's in the redzone he also threw for 2 scores. Justin Brown and Devon Smith had 7 and 6 catches on the day Brown took one to the house. On D it was a team effort as 5 different individuals had picks. Next week the Nitanny Lions welcome Northwestern to Happy Valley and with that several key recruits come to town to visit.

PSU Escapes With Win 2-0 in Big 10
    [IMG]
Well it wasn't pretty. The Nittany Lions were hot and cold all day. Besides RB Silas Redds 138 yards on the ground and 2 scores this team was mediocre at best. Jumping out to a 21-0 lead the team looked to put the 2nd string in in the 2nd qtr. Only to have NW put up 17 straight points and silence the Beaver Stadium crowd. QB Paul Jones had his worst day as a starting QB but still threw for 290 yards and 2 scores. Devon Smith had 5 catches for 120 yards and 1 score. On D the Lions were led by LB Glenn Carson who had 10 tackles and 1 sack. Next week the Lions travel to Ohio to take on the Bearcats of Cincinnati in what looks to be a matchup of two ranked teams.

    The Bearcats Stun PSU!!
Cincinnati put together a complete game today. Something Penn State has been trying to do all season. On Offense the Bearcats could not be stopped and on D they took advantage of several PSU turnovers to put themselves in good field position and also to score. From the 1st Penn State offensive play in which Cinn DE Dan Giordano took a lateral pass that was deflected back for a TD the game was never in question. "This game was a good building block we are a young team that was riding high on our 3 game win streak only to be tripped up by a well coached team that is very talented." said Coach York after the game. QB Paul Jones led the offense 15-22 for 178 yards and 2 TD's. Silas Redd led the way on the ground with 73 yards on 12 carries. Next week the Lions head to Iowa to take on the Big Ten Rival Hawkeyes.

    Back On Track
    [IMG]
Well the Nittany Lions got back to their winning ways. QB Paul Jones was electric today throwing for over 300 yards and 4 TD's. His main target was JR speedster Shawnay Kersey who had 2 TD catches and 177 yards. Silas Redd had another 100 yard game and the D came together in the 4th to shut down a comeback. "It wasn't pretty but it was a win. We thought we had a cakewalk after going up 14 early only to give up two scores because of turnovers. I want this team to learn to not let up. To bury its opponent from the jump. We have a lot of learning to do in order to beat the big boys in the coming weeks." Said Coach York after the game. Next up on the schedule is Ohio State. The Buckeyes come in ranked in the top 25. Should be a white out game. The Lions have several big recruits coming in next week.

    What A Game!!
One for the ages thats what some people said who were in Happy Valley this weekend. A comeback that has never been seen said others. In fact some didn't even see it as they probably turned off their TV's after the Nittany Lions went down 28-7 with 1:32 left in the second qtr. But the team didn't give up. The D was playing well as the Buckeyes scored 3 times on defense two fumble recoveries and one pick six put the lions in that deep hole. A 21 point 3rd qtr put the Lions ahead 35-31 but a nice QB scramble by Ken Guiton put the Buckeyes back on top 38-35. After both teams had drives that lead to missed FG's QB Paul Jones led the Lions on a 68 yard drive that was capped off by a Silas Redd 3 yard TD run. PSU now has a direct path to the Big Ten championship game as they are still indefeated in the conference and Whisky has one loss already. Next week the Lions take on Purdue in Indiana. What a GAME!!

It all happened so fast. One minute this team is at the top of the standings the next you look up at the score board and wonder how in the hell is Purdue ahead of this team. Leading 13-7 at the half Purdue came out of the locker room fired up. Only to see PSU shut them down in the third and most of the 4th asserting themselves and taking a 21-13 lead. But with just under 2 minutes to go the Boilermakers went into beast mode and scored a tying TD and 2 pt conversion to put the game into overtime. A heavy dose of Silas Redd would be your answer for OT right....wrong he was stuffed three plays in a row and the Lions settled for a FG. The Defense could not stop the Boilermakers in OT either as they gave up a TD pass to the back of the endzone on third and 5 from the 5. The pass looked to be bobbled and through the endzone but there was no replay. Alas if PSU wins out they win the division but this loss is a tough one as they now have to beat Nebraska IU and Whiskey to get to their Goal!!

    Almost Gave One Away!
Yeah that was a tough one to witness. After last weeks OT loss to Purdue PSU fans looked up at the score board and thought UH OH here we go again. With 54 seconds left in the game the Defense gave up a TD on a QB scramble from Husker QB Taylor Martinez for 39 yards and got the NU fans on their feet again. "It was defining in there. I told Jones and the WR's to keep their heads about them and that we would win this one. Don't do anything stupid take it one play at a time and with 3 TO's we could move the ball down the field into FG range. We did and we got our of there with a huge win. We are in the drivers seat as far as the division is concerned we win out and we will be in Detroit." said Coach York after the game. Jones led the team on that last drive but if it wasn't for Silas Redd the Lions would be headed home with a loss. Redd had 239 yards on the ground and 2 td's. Next week the Lions host IU in what looks to be an win over the last place team in the division.

    NOOOOOOOO!!
PSU lead this one from begining to end. But this win will be taken with a grain of salt as the Lions lost their top QB Paul Jones in the 1st QTR to a dislocated collar bone (it looks like he will miss the next 2 weeks). SR Matt Mcgloin took his place and played well. He threw for one score and after the 1st series (an interception on his 1st pass) took care of the ball. A lot of SR's got to play today as the second string was in the game for most of the second half. The coaching staff will have to go back to the drawing board as Mcgloin (who started most of his SO and JR years)will be under center for the Whisky game. The winner makes the Big 10 Championship game.

    YESSSSSS!!!
It seemed stacked against them. This was a bridge year. New coach, new QB, new system and new culture. After an off season that took alumni to their knees saw a legend walk away in shame and then pass away the PSU faithful had what most thought little to turn to on the Football Field. 6-6 is what most predicted. "Yeah at best that's what most of us thought here in the studio" said ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreet. Its funny that they had to reach to the past to pull out the victory today. The much maligned SR QB Matt Mcgloin has sat the bench for most of the season holding a clip board and mentoring SO QB and starter Paul Jones. When Jones went down in the 1st QTR last week against IU a few of the faithful said that although we have had a good season its not gonna get any better when Wisconsin comes to town nest week. Little did they know that Mcgloin would do his best Kerry Collins impersonation. After a rough start and a 1st half that saw them down 10. The D looked to turn the game around with an INT in the Whiskey Red Zone only to see Mcgloin get sacked on 1st and 10 and then throw an out that was picked off and returned 70 yards for a Wisconsin 17 point lead. "I called the Offensive players together and told them that Matt wasn't going to make that mistake again. We didn't get this far to let this team this university this town or this state down. Matt was going to lead us back he has put his heart and soul into this program for 4 years he was not gonna let this be the way he was defined he is Penn State." said Coach York. The team responded with 24 straight points and a 7 point lead late in the 4th. Wisconsin gave it a last ditch effort as backup running back James White took the ensuing Kick Off 102 yards to tie it up again with just over 3 min left. "I told the guys this was our game that the score would be in our favor at the end and that we would score before time ran out. Silas ran the ball well (177 yards 1 TD) and my receivers were awesome." said Mcgloin. With time ticking off the clock JR K Anthony Fera kicked a 25 yard FG to win the game and giving the Lions a berth into the Big Ten Championship game. "This job was a rebuilding project. They were decimated on the lines and the offense was anemic last year. We didn't know what to think of QB Paul Jones. What Coach York has done here is unprecidented. To take that team and win 9 games let alone the division is remarkable." added Herbstreet. It looks like the Lions will play Michigan in the title game with a chance to go to the Rose Bowl. At least for this one fall day Happy Valley is Happy again.
