Quarterback Battle Emerges as Biggest Question of Upcoming Season
QB Kevin Newsome Holds Top-Spot For Now
Happy Valley, PA
June 16, 2010
A little over a month away from the beginning of the 2010-2011 season, Penn State football fans still waiting for a final answer on who will lead the Nittany Lion offense. With the loss of Daryll Clark, the PSU coaching staff is closely analyzing three potential starters for the job. Sophomore Kevin Newsome seems to be the front runner, and mostly likely to start week 1, but JR Matt McGloin and FR Paul Jones are waiting in the on deck circle. Newsome and Jones excelled in the Blue and White game, while McGloin struggled. McGloin, a native of West Scranton, PA, has worked hard in camp and has put himself back into the hunt. Yet, the stain is still not removed from Coach Cimmy's head,
"He has showed promise that he can compete, but when the pressure was on in 'near' perfect game situation, he struggled. I want to see more from him. We could see all three quarterbacks get some time on the field week 1, but we need a definite answer for week 2 when we travel to Tuscaloosa. We need a leader for the Bama game."
Week 2 is going to be an early test for this Nittany Lion squad, led by HB Evan Royster and S Drew Astorino. Alabama returns the Heisman trophy winner in Mark Ingram, and always has a strong defense. The Tide also will spotlight a new coach this season in Coach Forever97, who is capable of going all the way.
Still with time to come up with a final roster for the Nittany Lions, Coach Cimmy does have his tentative roster set, and QB Kevin Newsome is currently the leader for this offense.
#12 Kevin Newsome
#22 Evan Royster
#80 Andrew Szczerba
#6 Derek Moye
#5 Graham Zug
#19 Justin Brown
#67 Quinn Barham
#50 DeOn'Tae Pannell

#61 Stefen Wisniewski
#77 Lou Eliades
#81 Jack Crawford

#56 Eric Latimore
#34 Nate Stupar
#6 Gerald Hodges
#48 Chris Colasanti

There is still a lot of work for this team to do, but they are ready. The defense may switch to a 3-4, or stay in the 4-3. Answers will arise and this team, according to Coach Cimmy, "Will Not Fail".

Nittany Lion Recruiting: 2010-2011 Season
From Massillon, OH, Pettway with good speed and defensive abilities. Looked underrated with his skills.
From Ephrata, PA, Silva has the skills to be all over the field. If he isn't redshirted his first year he should see significant playing time in multiple DB sets.
From Talladega, AL, Wood is one of the countries hardest hitting and talented LBs. Will definitely be a household name for Penn State football.
From Kingsport, TN, Hunter is one of PSU's recruits they are really looking forward to. Although they are deep at the HB position, Hunter brings a skill set much like a bulldozer.
From Mesquite, TX, Brewer is an all around stud. A true athlete with very good speed. Could play defensive back for the Lions.
From West Augusta, GA, Jacobs was a late commitment that the Lions had been working on all season. Good speed and coverage ability, will make an impact down the road.
From Economy, PA, Myrick will likely be a WR for the Lions, which they are excited about. Good hands and speed. Myrick will be shirted this upcoming season so he can impact this team in his prime.
From Paramus, NJ, McDonald is a head hunter. Like Myrick, he will definitely be redshirted his freshman year, but will be a force to reckon with when he consistently sees playing time for PSU.
Nittany Lion Preseason Picks Up
The Nittany Lions are hitting the practice fields and weight rooms hard this offseason, looking to make a run for the Big10 title. The Nittany Lions fell to mediocrity in the Big10 conference last season, finishing with a Gator Bowl win over South Carolina. PSU wants more. They want to contend. Offseason recruiting is a huge focus for the Lions as they look to gain talent on both sides of the ball. Kevin Newsome is likely to be the starter under center for the Lions after putting up great numbers as the season drew to a close last year. Evan Royster will be gone, but Stephfon Green and Curtis Dukes will likely be the top 2 contenders to fill that void as starter, as well as Silas Redd who will be trying to make an impact. The coaches have these kids running the gauntlet this offseason to get into prime condition for a tough Big10, which includes defending National Champ Ohio State. The Buckeyes, as well as Michigan and Iowa will be the 3 main threats to the Lions pursuit of glory. PSU lost to all 3 opponents last year as well as a tough Crimson Tide team. Penn State is anxious to get this season under way and make a run for the Big10 Championship.

WhiteoutWire.com Breaking News - RecruitingFirst week of a crucial recruiting season for the Nittany Lions and they pick up the depth at OLB they were looking for. The 6th ranked OLB Sean Hayes from Petal, MS decided to head north to play for the Nittany Lions. Hayes will be joining a team that he could see immediate impact on depending on the season OLB Ben Capps has. He could likely be a starter on Saturdays for PSU depending on what he shows in the spring. ESPN rates him as a prospect. Breaking him down his SPD skills are rated C with ACC at B-. The more important backer skills though is where he shows promise down the road. He is rated C+ in tackling, play recognition, block shredding, pursuit and zone coverage. He is also rated B- in hit power, strength, power moves, and finesse moves. Hayes is a strong outside backer that Linebacker U is proud to have coming to them next season.
WhiteoutWire.com Breaking News - RecruitingRyan Jackson, the 11th ranked DE and an ESPNU 150 member commits to Penn State. Jackson is a 6' 0" 244 LB DE from Scott Township, PA. Jackson is an explosive player who will come off the ball fast for the PSU defense. He is also strong and knows how to work his way around or through a block and still pack a punch. Juco FS (#25) Tyler Huff also commits to the Nittany Lions this week. Huff, a 6' 1" 201 LB FS from Ardmore, OK wants to bring his experience to Happy Valley to see what he can do in Division 1. Huff is another explosive player with great speed and very good acceleration. His tackling skills are solid, and his zone coverage is top notch. He will need to work on his man coverage, but his hit power will deliver blows and rattle receivers.
