WISCONSIN STARTS SEASON OFF WITH ROUTE

The #3 ranked Wisconsin Badgers began thier 2011 campaign with a 41-14 win over the UNLV Rebels. UNLV was outmatched in every category and nearly every position. Wisconsin set the tone early with 17 first qtr points before allowing 14 by UNLV in the 2nd qtr. Wisconsin would tack on 10 itself to take a 27-14 halftime lead.

Another quick Badger TD to start the 2nd half would be all Coach Onaradio34 would need to see from his starters. Up 34-14, the second string would get some playing time and add another TD in the fourth.

New starting QB C. Phillips had a nice game with a stat line of: 12-21, 241 yards, 3 TD's, 0 INT's. John Clay toted the rock 16 times for 142 yards and 1 TD and caught 2 balls for 47 yards and another score. Senior WR Nick Toon added 4 catches for 80 yards and a TD. True freshman WR Gray saw his first action as a Badger and reeled in 4 catches for 49 yards.

The defense was a team effort with no player acoounting for more than 5 tackles.

Wisconsin moves to 1-0 (0-0) and awaits a date with the Oregon State Beavers.

BADGERS SILENCE CRITICS, GET BIG VICTORY

Wisconsin passed its first true test of the season with a 27-21 victory over the #13 Oregon State Beavers. Alot of people were doubting the validity of their #2 ranking, and bets were heavily in favor of the visiting Beavers.

The Oregon St D wanted to make a statement early that Wisconsin All-American John Clay would not beat them on his own. On the first play from scrimmage, Clay heads between the tackles only to be met furiously by a OSU linebacker. Sensing that OSU may be overcomitting to their first read, Coach Onaradio34 called a misdirection that started left but saw Clay cross back to the right before getting the handoff. The play was executed perfectly and Clay goes for 80 yards and a TD with a wave "goodbye" to the safety.

The Badger D forced a 3-and-out and gets the offense back onto the field. Another solid drive led by Senior WR Toon as he reels in 2 big catches, one of which was a corner route that set the badgers up with a 1st and goal from the 2. Clay would finish off the drive for his 2nd TD.

The Oregon St defense would again be stopped, this time by was of a bone jarring hit by OLB Rouse that seperates the player from the ball. Rouse would crawl onto the fumble to give Wisconsin great field position.

A few plays later, its Clay again. This time a 23 yard TD run, his 3rd in the 1st quarter. Cue Chris Berman, "rumblin', stumblin'...

Oregon State decides its seen enough turns it on. They score on their next 2 drives while the Wisc offense is unable to keep drives alive. Wisconsin gets the ball back with 1:30 left before halftime, but coach Onaradio34 decides to sit on the lead and runs out most of the clock.

Oregon St is unable to get anything going on its first possession and the Wisc offense immediately goes back to work with the ground game. After a couple 1st downs, Wisc gets the D looking into the backfield while QB Phillips find his WR Duckworth for a 30+ yard pass game to get into field position.

Unfortunatley the drive stalls as Wisc really goes conservative with its playcalling. A 41 yd FG by P. Welch puts Wisconsin back up by 2 scores 24-14. Both offenses sputter for a period befor Wisconsin is able to tack on another FG with 4:45 remaining in the 4th and Wisc leading 27-14. Oregon St marches down the field despit some heavy resistance and a 4th down conversion and scores a TD with 2:45 remaining and all 3 TO's remaining.

This is where the badgers hoped to be...in the lead with the ability to lean on its veteran o-line and its horse, Clay. Success...OSU is unable to get the ball back as Wisconsin eats the clock to 0:00 and wins 27-21.

Player of the Game was easily Clay: 26 car, 226 yards, 3 TD's.

QB Phillips in only his 2nd start was phenomenal as well. 10-12, 131 yds, 0TD's, 0 INT's. He was only asked to throw when Clay needed a breather or on 3rd and longs. No mistakes. Half of those receptions and 72 of the yards went to Toon.

Stat of the Game: Heisman candidate J. Rodgers only had 18 touches: 14 rushes for 50 yards, 2 catches for 11 yards, 2 KO returns for 43 yards.

    AFTER SLUGGISH START, BADGERS ROMP

A possible sandwich game turned ugly in Madison. A week after defeating Oregon St and a week before challenging Nebraska, Wisconsin had to somehow get up for the visiting NIU Wolfpack. A lethargic 1st qtr had the Badgers trailing 3-0. The 2nd qtr began with a bang however as Clay takes the handoff off-tackle, runs through an arm tackle, then puts a double-spin on two defenders before breaking for the endzone and a 37 yd TD.

Wisconsin would get the ball right back and goto work again. Clay would finish this drive as well on an 18 TD scamper.

Clay would cap off another TD drive with a 5 yard plunge at the end of the half to give Wisc a 21-3 halftime lead.

The Badgers received the ball and drove down for a 42 yard P. Welch FG that would be the last action for the starters. The 2nd string would tack on 7 more on a B. Ewing TD run while the 2nd stringers on D shutout NIU's offense.

Clay earned POG honors again with his 12 carry, 110 yard, 3 TD performance. QB Phillips had another solid start going 8-12 with 147 yards 0 TD and 0 INT's.

Up next for the Badgers is a Top 5 showdown in Lincoln, NE against the #5 Nebraska Cornhuskers.

WISCONSIN WINS SHOOTOUT IN MADISON 38-35

The #1 Wisconsin Badgers and the #4 Iowa Hawkeyes staged an instant classic Saturday in Madison, WI. A back and forth slugfest with jabs and haymakers and enough momentum swings to give a monk a heartattack. Wisconsin won the toss and elected to kickoff first. After a quick stop by the Badger D, Iowa is forced to punt. John Clay asserted himself on the first carry, breaking 3 tackles and going 69 yards for a Wisconsin TD.

A long methodical drive by the Iowa offense answers the Badger score. RB B. Wegher would score on a 1 yard dive. Wisconsin is unable to get anything going on its next drive and is forced to punt. Iowa would again drive down the field mixing the run and the pass and keeping the badgers guessing. An 8 yard TD pass from Vandenberg to B. Herman would give Iowa a 14-7 lead with 5 minutes remaining in the 2nd qtr.

Clay would again go to work and broke another big gain. Alittle over a minute after Iowa took the lead, Clay would plunge into the endzone from 4 yards out to tie the game. The Iowa offense is unable to sustain a promising drive and is forced to punt the ball back to Wisconsin. Badger QB Phillips connects on a couple passes to set up a first down at the Iowa 20 with just over 40 seconds left. Coach Onaradio34 decides to go power run with Clay in the hope of catching the Iowa D backpeddaling into coverage. It didnt work exactly how it was drawn up with Clay getting met behind the line of scrimmage. But Clay showed why he is the Heisman frontrunner and broke a tackle and raced for the TD. Wisconsin takes a 21-14 halftime lead.

Wisconsin opens the 2nd half with a nice drive capped by a 3 yard TD plunge by FB Davidson to take a 14 point lead. B. Wegher would get his second TD run of the game for the Hawkeyes on the following series to cut the lead to 28-21 at the end of the 3rd.

Another stalled Wisconsin drive gave the ball back to Iowa with a chance to tie the game. Vandenberg would capatalize on the oppotunity with a beautiful 18 yard TD pass to P. Chaney, Jr to knot the game at 28-28. The Badger offense had an answer of its own, marching down the field while killing valuable clock before Clay gets his 4th TD run of the evening from 6 yards out.

With 1:05 remaining in the game, its do-or-die time for Iowa. Two plays and 15 seconds is all it would take as Vandenberg finds TE C. Fiedorowicz streaking down the seam open after beating his man with Wisconsin blitzing. 35-35, :50 left on the clock. Wisconsin gets 2 huge plays from its playmakers. First, Clay gets a huge gain on a screen play. Then, senior WR Toon pulls down a 36 yard completion that puts Wisconsin in FG range. Clay runs left to center the kick up and P. Welch nails the 29 yard game winner with no time left on the clock. Wisconsin 38-35.

Clay gets the game ball for his 22 carry, 205 yard, 4 TD, 3 rec, 58 yard day.

Wisconsin goes to 5-0 (0-0) on the year with the undefeated Wolverines up in week 6.

Again, I am glad he will not receive another year of eligibility. I was worried about my front 7, and this was why. Other than getting lucky on a few blitz calls that stopped Clay for short gains or losses, he had his way with my defense.

    HIGH HURDLE NEARLY TRIPS BADGERS

"We didn't play bad, they just played very well," said Coach Onaradio34 after Wisconsin defeated Michigan 23-21. "They were very tough defensively and stalled us every trip to the redzone. If we convert any of those 3 FG's into TD's, we have a good cushion. Give them credit, their interior line negated our between-the-tackles run game and their pass rush was phenomenal."

Noone expected a cake walk but neither did they expect Michigan to be ten yards away from a game-winning FG. After a Michigan fumble on the second play from scrimmage, QB Phillips found Duckworth down the left sideline for a quick TD and 7-0 lead.

It would be the only Badger offensive TD all game. The first of 3 Welch FG's gave Wisc a 10-0 lead in the 1st qtr and looked as if Michigan was about to be steamrolled.

On Michigan's first play following the FG, RB Shaw broke free from 3 different Badger defenders and chugged 80 yards for the score. Wisconsin tacked on another FG but Michigan took the lead right before the half on a 40 yard pass from Forcier to Roundtree. Michigan took a 14-13 lead into the lockerroom.

A quick 3-and-out by Wisc gave Michigan the ball back. Shaw, however, coughed up the ball for the 2nd time and Badger LB Rouse was there to scoop the ball up and return it 39 yards for the score.

Wisconsin tacked on another FG after another good drive stalled in the redzone. Wisconsin was held to 3 FG's in three trips there on the afternoon. At the end of the 3rd Wisc leads, 23-14.

Michigan gets another TD pass by Forcier, this time a 4 yarder to Stonum to cut the lead to 2 with 2:11 left in the 4th. Clay busts two straight 10+ yard runs burning 2 Wolverine TO's. On 2nd and 9, Phillips audibles for williams to run a streak after both safeties creep to the line. Williams burns the covering LB by 5 yards but Phillips overthrows him. Wisconsin punts back to Mich and pins them on the 15 with one minute remaining. After moving down into Wisc territory the Mich offense is stopped on downs and Wisc takes a knee to preserve the victory.

Wisconsin (6-0, 2-0) takes on undefeated #25 ranked Minnesota in week 7

    #1???

For the 4th straight week, Wisconsin faced an undefeated Top 25 team. For the 3rd straight week, they barely escaped with an untarnished record. This time it was #25 and hated rival Minnesota that took the Badgers to the wire. The Gophers did their homework from the Michigan game, and like the Wolverines one week ago, brutalized the Badger interior O-line. Clay still gained 140 yards on 28 carries, but hardly any of that came between the tackles.

The 14-7 win gives Wisconsin another quality victory, but look for there to be some doubters in the media. Oregon State, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota are a combined 19-5 with all 5 of those losses coming to the Badgers. Yet, Alabama is now tied Wisc in the coaches poll and gaining in the Media.

As for the scoring in thegame, Phillips found true freshman TE W. Jones for a 22 yard TD to put Wisconsin up 7-0 in the first. Minnesota tied the game on an 8 yard TD run by Eskridge midway through the 2nd. Montee Ball gave Wisc the go-ahead TD at the end of the 3rd on a 2 yard plunge.

Wisconsin (7-0, 3-0) gets a much needed rest week 8.

    BADGER FOOTBALL REAMERGES

After a few weeks of "just good enough" football, Wisconsin put together its best overall performance in a month. "211 yards rushing and 212 yards passing, I like those stats," Coach Radio said in the post game press conference. "We out-rushed them by 184 yards, won the turnover battle, had 10 more 1st downs, and converted more 3rd downs. It was a solid performance heading into a huge game this weekend".

Senior RB John Clay got the Badgers started with 2 early TD runs (1 and 4 yards). He finished the game with only 14 carries but amassed 90 yards and the 2 TD's. On Purdue's next possession they would be called for holding on the KO return and backed up to the 9 yard line. Two consecutive sacks gave Wisconsin a safety (pictured above) and a 16-0 lead. After the free kick, the Badgers drove down to the 3. On 1st and goal, Phillips finds TE Byrne in the corner of the end zone.

After another quick Wisconsin stop, the Badgers went to work again. With a minute left to go in the half, Phillips faced down a heavy Purdue blitz and lofted a beautiful ball that WR Toon brought down in the end zone for a 40 yard TD (pictured below). That would end the half and the game for the starters as Wisc headed into halftime with a 30-0 lead.

The second half was fairley uneventful as Wisconsin kept to the ground and gave backup Montee Ball his most significant playing time since missing 6 weeks due to injury. The Junior finished with 101 yards and a TD on 13 carries.

Senior WR Nick Toon also made his return from injury and had a productive day with 5 catches for 111 yards and a score.

Wisconsin improves to 9-0 with a huge conference showdown @ Penn State next week. A win would nearly lock a Rose Bowl trip for the badgers as well as keep them in the driver's seat for a ticket to the National Championship. A loss means they must defeat Michigan State and Illinois to win the Big 10.
