Gore and Taylor Save Sloppy Patriots From Upset

Detroit,MI (AP) -- One thing the Patriots have learned this season is how to finish games they also learned they are not a one dimensional unlike last season. Frank Gore carried the ball 16 times for 124 yards while Fred Taylor chip in 53 yards and 2 scores on 9 carries while the defense forced Stafford into 3 interceptions as New England avoided a stunning upset in Detroit 27-24.

Detroit would start the scoring after forcing the Patriots on a 3 and out on their first possession as Stafford would connect with Calvin Johnson on a 12 yard screen pass for a score. Patriots would answer right back but the drive stalled and they were force to settle for a FG (7-3). Detroit again answered right back as Stafford struck quick connecting with Reggie Wayne deep who would set up a Brown 4 yard TD run to put Detroit up (14-3) in front of their sellout home crowd. The Lions looked to be in complete control of the game and their defense did a good job confusing Brady to force the Patriots offense to stall on many occasions. The Patriots were sloppy in their first couple possession as Brady could never connect with Moss due to good coverage also it didn’t help that he dropped a lot he should have caught. Early in the second quarter Brady would eventually connect with Eldermen from 35 yards out to finally get the Pats in the endzone (14-10). Later before the half ended the Patriots looking more relaxed capped off another drive with a F.Taylor 15 yard TD run on 3rd and 1 to put them up (14-17) at the half.

Second half the Patriots came out more relax as the defense started to make stops and the offense seemed to get a rhythm. Lions would strike first adding a field goal to tie the game but later in the 3rd quarter Fred Taylor and the Patriots would strike again this time from 9 yards out on a draw play to put them up (17-24). Going into the 4th quarter more Patriots and Lions defense as they both would make key stops, Patriots holding ground as they did not want the lions to get back in the game. Brandon Meriweather would intercept a pass intended D.Williams to setup the offense in prime scoring position but the Lions would hold them just to a field goal and a 10 pt lead (17-27). From there the defense of the Patriots would again step up and make the key stops and the Patriots seemed to just run out the clock until Gore fumbled late and then two plays later Springs got called for pass interference putting the Lions inside the 5 where they would score on a Williams 3 yard TD catch to pull within 3 late in the game (24-27). A onside kick would give them a chance to tie but Elderman would recover and the Patriots would run out the clock to secure the win.

    Game Notes

Randy Moss was held to just 1 catch for 4 yards his lowest output of the season he also had numerous drops in perhaps his worst game. Calvin Johnson also had numerous drops but snatch 4 balls for 61 yards and a score. Tom Brady went 12-23 170 yards 1TD and 1 interception while Stafford went 21-34 304 yards 2 TDs and 3 interceptions. Mayo recorded his 11 interception on the season that ties him with teammate Darius Butler for the league leader in that category. Fred Taylor would get hurt late and will be out a week with an abdominal tear.
