COUGS WIN KRAFT FIGHT HUNGER BOWL OVER EASTERN MICHIGAN UNDER NEW HEAD COACH
    [IMG]
    WSU 27 - EMU 6
Washington State's defense came to play in the Fight Hunger Bowl, or the Mac N' Cheese game, as they shut down EMU's offense and held them to only 6 points. WSU's defense had 2 INT's returned for TD's in this game to outscore the EMU offense. Even though EMU outgained WSU and had more 1st downs, the Cougar defense showed up when it counted under new head coach, and alumnus Brent Evans. Things are looking up for WSU in the coming years, and a bowl win is always a good thing, even if the trophy is made of cheese!

Washington State opens up their season with a 42-30 win over cross town rival Idaho

    Pullman, WA

On a rainy day in the Palouse, WSU starts their season 1-0 by beating the Idaho Vandals 42-30. Both defenses looked sloppy, giving up a lot of big plays and each offense amassing over 470 yards. WSU's 2 senior running backs combined for 252 yards on 32 carries and 2 TD's and added 2 catches for 101 yards and a TD. Idaho QB Sammie Beach looked impressive, throwing the for 444 yards with 3 TD's and 1 INT. Washington State will have to get their act together defensively as they travel to Death Valley to take on LSU next week.

In recruiting news, WSU got a commit from :4stars:ATH Ron Cox who is 6'1" 184lbs who will probably play in the Cougar secondary in years to come.

Cougars stay close, but lose to Tigers at Death Valley
    31 - 14
WSU went into Death Valley to take on LSU, and they kept it close in the beginning. The score was tied with less than a minute to play in the first half, but the Cougs threw an interception returned for a TD to put LSU up 14-7 at the half, and they would get the ball to start the second half. After a couple of punts, LSU kicked a FG to make it 17-7, but the Cougars answered right back with a deep strike across the middle for 60 yards to bring them within 3 at 17-14. That was the score to start the 4th quarter, then the LSU ran an option play and their QB, Titus Singletary, ran 87 yards for a TD to put LSU up 10 with only 5:40 to play. The Cougar offense would struggle the rest of the game, and LSU ran for another TD with about a minute left to ice the game.
No recruiting news at this time.

Washington State just received another committment from a recruit:

:3stars:HB Isaiah Williamson 6'2" 173lbs with B+ speed and accelleration, he still has some skills he needs to work on, but should be a valuable piece to this football program moving forward, especially with 2 seniors at HB this year.

WSU loses heartbreaker to #7 Penn State at home
    WSU 6 - PSU 14

This game was tough to play for both sides, due to some lag, but Washington State held a 6-0 lead at the half and they were shutting down the Nittany Lion offense all first half. On the first drive of the 2nd half, Washington State tried to throw a little quick curl for a 1st down, but a Nittany Lion defender picked it off and returned it for a TD to give Penn State their first lead of the game 7-6. Both teams would continue to struggle on offense, and the 4th quarter began at 7-6 still. With about 6 minutes to go in the game, Penn State handed it off up the middle to their star running back, Clayton, and he ran right by all Cougar defenders on his way to a 52 yard TD run to put the Nittany Lions up by 8 at 14-6. With both offenses struggling, that score would stand, and the Cougs blew their chance at defeating a top 10 team at home early on. 6'8" JR TE T.J. McDonald had a good day, with 7 catches for 71 yards, as the only real bright spot for the Cougar offense.

WSU moves to 1-2 on the season and they head into their bye next week.

WSU Fights Back, Drops Tough One to Stanford 38-28

The Cougars scored the 1st points of the game on a TD run by Gary Sanchez, but Stanford reeled off 35 unanswered points to put the game out of reach for WSU. The Cougs would fight back in this, scoring 3 straight TD's to bring the score to 35-28, but with just under 4 minutes left in the game, Stanford stuffed a 4th and 1 attempt at midfield and kicked a FG to seal the game with 1 minute remaining.
WSU had 6 turnovers in this game as Rogers threw 5 INT's! (Good Lord...), but he still threw for 356 yards since they were down big early. Bowers caught 12 passes for 169 yards and a TD and Taylor caught 9 passes for 130 yards in the defeat.
WSU moves to 1-3 and face Arizona State next weekend.

WSU Cruises Past ASU 70-14 As Offense Wakes Up

WSU's offense awoke in this game, and they could just not be stopped. They were up 21-0 before ASU mounted a scoring drive, but in a 1:06 span, WSU put up 3 more TD's, capitalizing on ASU turnovers, and the Cougs were up 42-7 at the half. Washington State was able to play backups at all positions and get some Freshmen some key playing experience in this game as they move to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Pac-12 play.

    WSU Hangs Tough, Loses Heartbreaker

Washington State looked good for most of the game, and were up 14-12 at the half. The Cougars took the opening drive of the 2nd half and drove down the field and Rogers hit Bowers for a 28 yard TD pass to put them up 21-12. Oregon's offense was just too powerful for the Cougar defense, and it only took them 50 seconds to drive down the field and get a TD to bring them within 2. On WSU's next possession, Rogers was sacked and fumbled and Oregon recovered. A few plays later, Oregon got another TD and converted on the 2 point conversion to put them up by 6. But Washington State would retake the lead on their next drive, as Rogers hit Taylor over the middle to put WSU up 28-27 entering the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter was scoreless until Oregon put a drive together and kicked a FG to go up 30-28 with 25 seconds left. Washington State got to within FG range after a couple of deep passes, and had a chance for the victory with a 40 yard FG as time expired. But Oregon iced the kicker, and the kick went left and hit off the upright, keeping Oregon undefeated, and sending Washington State fans home heartbroken.

Shootout in Corvallis, Cougs get a Walk-Off Victory
    WSU 43 - OSU 42
Washington State jumped out to an early 17-7 lead in the 2nd quarter, but in the last 48 seconds of the half, Oregon State scored twice to give them a 21-17 lead at the half. There was some scoring in the 3rd quarter on both sides, WSU 10 and OSU 14, but all the excitement and tension was in the last few minutes of the game... It was 35-27 entering the 4th, when Sanchez for WSU busted a 34 yard TD run to bring WSU within 2, so the Cougs went for 2 and missed, leaving the score at 35-33. OSU took their next drive down to the 2:39 mark and scored a TD on a 3 yard TD pass to put them back up 42-33. Just a few plays later, Rogers hooked up with Taylor on a deep bomb to bring WSU back within 2. With 3 timeouts left, the Cougars decided to kick deep and play defense, with 1:52 left in the game. Oregon State got a 1st down on their first run, then on their second run, Edwards for WSU delivered a crushing blow, forcing a fumble which WSU recovered on the OSU 30 yard line. Washington State ran the ball a few times to get closer to FG range, then with 1 second left, Taylor split the uprights to give WSU the victory!

Pollard of OSU threw for 402 yards and 6 TD's, while Rogers threw for 377 yards and 3 TD's on only 11 completions in this Air Fest.

After looking at my schedule, I believe I could win out if I play disciplined football, but I only need to win 3 more to be bowl eligible, which could happen since all games are CPU games.

Washington State Routes Cal, Moves Closer to Bowl Eligibility
    WSU 49 - Cal 21

Washington State was ready to play from the opening kickoff in this one, as they started the game with a TD on their opening drive and it was all WSU from there. The Cougs jumped to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter before Cal got on the board to bring it to within 21-7. It was 35-14 at the half, and the Cougars could just cruise to victory. They only threw 4 passes in the second half as the running game was going strong, even when WSU put in all their backups and young players in the 3rd quarter, the Cougs still scored 14 points by just rushing the ball. Rogers threw for 227 yards and 2 TD's on 12/22 passing, and senior running back Gary Sanchez ran the ball 24 times for 188 yards and 4 TD's. Freshman running back Frazier showed promise as he had 57 yards on 9 carries for a 6.3 yard per carry average. Washington State is now 4-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

Cougars Strong 2nd Half Brings Them 1 Closer to Bowl Eligibility
    Washington State 36 - Utah 24

Washington State started off the scoring on a 6 yard TD run by Gary Sanchez on their first drive, but then Utah scored 21 unanswered before the Cougars could respond. Washington State added 2 FG's and a TD before the half to make the score 21-20 at halftime. The Utes got a FG on their opening drive of the second half to put them up 24-20, and on the Cougars next drive, they went all the way to the Utah 1 yard line, but were stuffed each time and on 4th down. 2 plays later, however, Utah QB Mike Harris was sacked in the end zone for a safety to bring WSU back within 2 points. Washington State added 2 TD's in the 4th quarter and intercepted Utah twice in the 4th as well to seal the game at 36-24. WSU moves to 5-5 on the year and only needs 1 more win in their final 2 games to become bowl eligible.
