Knoxville, TN- In a matchup between David and Goliath, Tennessee smacked North Texas 51-14. The Vols flexed on the lowly Mean Green as Vols WR Zach Rogers and Sr QB Matt Simms both had career games on the expense of North Texas. Simms threw for a career high 6 touchdowns to go along with 364 yards for Tennessee. Rogers caught 7 balls for 113 yards to include 4 touchdowns. The Vols jumped all over the Mean Green getting out to a 37-14 halftime lead. The Vols starters would get some extra work as coach Jerzey didn't pull them until they had a 28 point lead in the 3rd quarter. Tennessee's once potent rushing attack dwindled as it took two combined rushing performances to cross the century mark.

    Final Score:

    Tennessee: 51
    North Texas: 14

    LTU 21 - FSU 60

FSU starts the season with a good 'ol fashision whooping against Louisiana Tech. The offense finally got to stretch those legs out and see how they fair against regular competition as oppsed to their second string D. Passing game was clicking behind new signal caller EJ Emanuel. Chris Thompson struggle a bit in the run game but still mananged to get 100 yards on the ground. The defense played tough but a few big passing plays allowed LTU to get on the board. WR Rodney Smith had a big game with 198 yards recieving on 8 grabs.

    POTG - EJ Emanuel - 20/29 - 429 / 2TD/0INT

    TCU 28 Baylor 42

Baylor starts the season with upsetting #11 TCU. Game was never really as close as the score states. Baylor had a 28-6 lead at haltime and pulled off the pedal which almost cost them but Griffin wouldnt let it happen this week as he got everyone involved in this game. 4 guys had 3 receptions or more and Gordon had 4 rec 151yds and 1 td.

    POTG- Robert Griffin 15-22 290yds 3tds 1 int 18att 126yds 2tds

#3 UNC Escapes Against South Carolina, Wins 45-35

Finishing last season with only 1 loss and coming out victorious in their BCS bowl game, UNC has high expectations for this year. Their hopes and dreams were almost dashed by the resilient Gamecocks of South Carolina. In a game where UNC thoroughly dominated, they found themselves having to come from behind most of the afternoon. The Tar Heels were sloppy, tossing 3 interceptions and losing a fumble. South Carolina capitalized by returning an interception and the fumble for a TD. "We were moving down the field each time and they return it 63 yards and 81 yards for a TD," said coach nrg_qbz. "That is absolutely unacceptable and will be dealt with in practice." UNC was up 17-14 at halftime, but SC opened up the 3rd quarter with the fumble return. Freshman Giovani Benard would answer back with a TD run of his own. SC would close the gap to 38-35 but could not return the onside kick. Benard would rush for his 3rd TD of the day with 11 seconds left as UNC tried to run out the clock. "We made too many mental mistakes. The season is early though. You will see a much more focused team in the next game," said QB Renner.

Florida travels out west and beats # 7 Stanford by 9. In a game where the OC was clearly forcing the run game, John Brantley only threw 13 passes for 201 yards. Jeff Demps, Chris Rainey, and Mike Gillisllee would all score on the ground. William Green had a pick 6 from his DE position in a perfectly timed zone blitz call. Janoris Jenkins and DT Omar HUnter also had picks, DE Ronald Powell added 2 sacks to lead a stout performance from the DLine. 29-19 was the final.

Va Tech falls behind 27-0 in the 1st half before getting into a groove. From the 3 minute mark of the second qtr through the rest of the game, VT would outscore BYU 48-6. Ryan Williams had 132 yards on 23 carries and 2 TD's. He would have had 4 but he kept either getting hurt or winded when VT got inside the 5.

Thomas has taken the early lead in the QB battle after Clayton struggles. Clayton started the game and was pulled after going 2-5 with 2 picks. Thomas came in and went 9-16 for 194 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

VT opens ACC play @ Duke week 2.

I can't begin to describe how frustrating it is to play ASU and they have more offensive weapons than the 1993 Dallas Cowboys.

    Auburn 24 - Memphis 20

Auburn survives a close call in rainy Jordan-Hare Stadium after losing QB Cam Newton for the game

The Auburn Tigers were able to overcome injuries and sloppy play to pick up their first win of the year against Memphis at home. Auburn gave up three turnovers (2 INT, 1 fumble) and were not able to force any.

Early in the second quarter, Auburn QB Cam Newton sprained his wrist and was unable to play the remainder of the game. In his absence, true freshman QB Bryant Mackey stepped in. Mackey looked great the remainder of the second quarter and lead Auburn to a 14-0 lead after a 34 yard touchdown pass to WR Antonio Goodman just before halftime.

As well as Auburn played the first half, the third quarter was a huge momentum shift. After Memphis scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the second half, Mackey threw a low pass that was tipped up in the air by a defensive tackle and Memphis DT Jimmy Robertson somehow intercepted the Mackey pass and chugged 85 yards for what might be the longest touchdown for any DT in history. This crazy play tied the game at 14-14. After some sloppy drives and field goals, Memphis took the lead 20-17 with two minutes remaining in the game. With his back to the wall, Mackey stepped up. Although he was not lights out, Mackey made the big play when it was needed converting three fourth down attempts in Auburn's final offensive drive. After advancing to the Memphis 12 yard line, Mackey dropped back for a pass and found no open receivers downfield. Mackey took off and made an elusive move to sneak past a Memphis linebacker and scamper into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown with just 46 seconds left.

Auburn will need a big game from Cam Newton coming off of his wrist injury as the Tigers host the #25 Baylor Bears next week.
