2014 North Carolina Season Preview Offense - On the offensive side of the ball, the Tar Heels will have to break in a new QB for the first time in 3 years. Gone are the days of Bryn Renner and his pin point accuracy. North Carolina is having an intense battle for the starting QB spot with the reps currntly being handled by Devin Davenport, William Wheeler, and John Anderson, in that order. Darrin Montgomery returns after getting some valuable playing time last season after Giovanni Bernard went down in the 2nd game after what looked to be a promising season. Montgomery eclipsed the 1000 yard mark last season, but will most likely find himself in a back up role again this season due to the arrival of the highly touted recruit Max Jackson. Jackson, easily Coach RTP's biggest recruit to date, finds himself atop the depth chart to start his rookie year. Jackson has plenty of spped to burn and Coach RTP just has to make sure it is utilized at the right times and for the right reasons. At the WR Position, Robert Carey, Sean Tapley, and Pat Thomas hold down the top 3 spots on the depth chart with nice young talent waiting their chance to see the field. Freshman Bryson Hall will get the start at the TE spot, which has not been a strong position for Coach RTP's Tar Heels since the departure of Pianalto 3 season ago. The Offensice line has matured over the off season and welcomes back some great experienced talent at all the starting spots. Defense - The Tar Heel defense returns starters at several key spots including one of the D end positions. Brandon Willis has tried to leave the program for the pros for the last 2 years and once again, Coach RTP has talked him into staying one more year. Willis will play the strong side DE position. On the week side, look for Martin Hayes to try to prove his worth as he will be a first year starter. At Defensive tackle, Senior John Brown returns for his senior season after sitting a year to add depth at the position. Brown has been itching to get back on the field and in the face of opposing QB's. At the other DT spot, look for stump Curtis Bray to fill the gaps while Brown is rushing the passer and the backfield. The linebacking Corps have reloaded once again for the Tar Heels. OLB Eric White has sharpend his skills in coverage and is ready to reak havoc across the middle. On the other side, Eric Leak is returning for his Junior season and has been spending extra time in the film room to gai more knowledge and help hold down the fort for the Heels. In the middle, look for JUCO transfer Rich Osborn to get a look at the MLB spot as well as Sophomore Robbie Thomas. Of all the LB spots, the MLB position still looks to be one year away. Both starting corners from last season return along with both the back ups. Chris Rogers returns for his 3rd straight season starting for UNC. Much the same for FS convert Brandon Gray. These 2 guys are as talented as any other CB duo in the country and will make throwing the ball a nightmare for opposing QB's. (RS)Jr. Jacob Carey is back at FS as well and looks to build on last season when he took home the Thorpe award. Carey is committed to getting his degree and will most likely look to go pro after this season. Another (RS)Jr. will be starting opposite Carey. Jason Schroeder will be making his first start this season. Special Teams - Freshman Kicker Devin Gallagher will be booting the pig skin for the Tar Heels this season. Last years starter Marques Madsen has been moved to Punter. Gallagher will help the Tar Heels tremendously this sesaon and will put a new meaning to Field Goal Range for UNC this season. Returning kicks this season will be WR John Mitchell and CB Chris Rogers. Punt Return Duties will be shared by John Mitchell and HB Max Jackson.
