Offensively, the Tar Heels lost first year RS(So.) QB Devin Davenport to the NFL draft and had to reach into their bag of QB's and pulled out a winner. William Wheeler played some last season, but only in a back up role. Wheeler has all the tools to have a great season and looks to put his name on the map. Freshman sensation Max Jackson is back for his So. year and looks to build on his Heisman runner up season from last year. He has gained quickness and has the determination to improve and become a team leader. Robert Carey and Pat Thomas provide a great one/two punch for William Wheeler and are anxious to see their names in the Tar Heels lights.
Defensively, CB Chris Rogers went to the NFL after his Jr' season and left the defense to his understudy Brandon Gray. Gray is a legit NFL type corner that will fill Roger's shoes nicely. JUCO transfer Ryan Harrell gained alot of knowledge after a redshirt year and now looks to hold down the weak corner spot. His coverage skills and quickness should be a lethal combination. Jacob Cary will be starting for his 3rd straight season and is now the leader of the secondary. OLB's Erik White and Eric Leak leave opposing QB's no room for error along the short middle of the field and will also cover the flats like no other LB's in college football this season. The defensive line may be the only inexperienced group on the defense this season, although the guys up front do have several seasons under their belts in the defensive scheme of coach RTP.
Devin Gallgher returns after his award winning Fr. season as the Kicker for the Tar Heels. Conner Prince steps in as the new punter. Max Jackson and Ryan Herrell will be handling the kicking duties.
