USC Opens New Area on a Winning Note
Upends Miami 20-7 at the Coliseum

It was the first game for both myself and OnIowa at our new teams. I had moved from Alabama to USC while Iowa had moved from Iowa to Miami. The 1st half was a half were both coaches were feeling out their teams and trying to figure out what would work and what was not going to work which was resulted in a low scoring first half with USC leading 10-0. In the 3rd Qtr the Hurricanes responded with a nice rive to cut the Trojan lead to 10-7. But the Trojans extended their lead early int he 4th qtr with a 21 yard FG. Late in the game the Trojans put the game away when Olson broke lose on a 66 yard TD run to make the final 20-7. The key stat of the game was USC ability to control the ball and the clock as they held onto the ball for almost 20 minutes compared to 8 minutes for the Hurricanes.
It was another great game by OnIowa as usual and I look forward to the return match next season in Miami.

#25 Florida State ushers in a new era of football, knocking off arch-rival #14 Florida 31-14 to open the season. In a game that usually concludes the season, ESPN manage to pull enough strings to have this one kick off this year's college football season. Both teams started slow offensively until sophomore Seminole running back Paul Harrell broke a long run, blasting through to the second level right behind the guard and busting it to the sideline for 80 yards. Senior Dwight Watts was unquestionably the most talented player on the field, rushing 23 times for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns. Watts also added a handful of nice punt returns for the Noles. The story of the second half was the Seminole defense, shutting down the Gator offense and allowing just 226 total yards (most of which came in the second quarter). True freshman quarterback Tony Hart struggled in his debut after missing all of spring practice, although he did break a nice run that led to a Seminole touchdown. The Noles will travel to Columbus to take on a tough-as-nails Ohio State team next week before opening ACC play.

Our 1st game and SR CB Jenkins who decided not to go into the draft showed why he will be a 1st round pick. He housed 2 big OK returns for TDS. Our New Offense got a lot of HB's carries and it looks to be a nice change for our team. McCormick is the real deal.

Ohio State traveled to Tennessee last season and came away victorious in a very tight and close battle. This year's matchup was expected to be more of the same but that ended up not being the case. The Vols got the ball first and had a long drive down the field ending with a TD run and an early 7-0 lead. Then Ohio State would start to take control of the game behind a lot of big plays. The biggest one came at the end of the 1st half. Tennessee faced a long field with little time remaining and opted to run and option right. Freeman missed the pitchman and DT Tommy Blanks picked up the ball and ran it in for a TD...a play very reminiscent of one in the 3rd quarter of the game last season in Knoxville.
The 2nd half was more of the same. Ohio State kept hitting some big plays when they needed it while Tennessee struggled getting the ball down the field. The Buckeyes were able to go on to win 38-14.

UCLA came to Bryant Denny stadium and spoiled the first game for Coach Crow. A missed xp caused Bama to have to go for two and they were unsuccessful and lost a heartbreaker.
