    The Great Escape

Miami intercepts Penn State Quarterback Jeff Watkins 4 times, including Montoya's 4th Quarter pick

The Miami Hurricanes enter the season #10 with a lot to prove. The Hurricanes have finished a disappointing 9-4 each of the last two years following their National Championship. In 2016, the Canes are out of excuses, it's time to put up or shut up! Miami headed to Happy Valley for a tough test to open the season against #6 Penn State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Jeff Watkins. Miami would lose the coin toss and Penn State would elect to defer. On their 1st possession of 2016, Miami's offense looked pretty good driving down deep into Penn State territory on a good mixture of runs, options, and shotgun passes. Unfortunately, on a 3rd down at the Nittany Lion 32 yard line, the drive stalled and Adam Everett trotted out and split the uprights for a 50-yard field goal, giving Miami a 3-0 lead. Miami's defense came out on the field determined to stop Watkins and Penn State's option attack, which was easier said than done. The Canes did manage to force Penn State into a passing situation, Alexander called a timely blitz, and when linebacker Kevin Moody came flying into the backfield, Watkins tried to get his pass off, but the pressure caused the ball to flutter up in the air where defensive end Andrew Everett snatched the ball out of the air. Everett broke a tackle and got the ball into Penn State territory. Miami's Heisman Hopeful, Darrell Marquardt, again had the offense moving well, but was hit hard at the 8 yard line on an option run and had to leave the game briefly with a strained shoulder. Jon Bates came in on 1st and goal from the 8, faked a handoff and hit fullback Josh Gallagher in the flat for an 8-yard touchdown pass and a 10-0 lead. Penn State would take only :29 to respond, when Watkins found wideout Mike Berry for a 68-yard touchdown pass when Berry was able to get behind Hurricane corner Bobby Montoya, making the score 10-7 Miami at the end of the 1st quarter.

Moody forces a bad throw and Everett intercepts it

Miami appeared to have the game under control after they took what seemed to be a commanding 24-7 lead. Starting running back Billy Johnson was lost for 5 weeks with a broken tailbone at the end of an impressive run where he broke several tackles, so Ron Robinson came in to replace him. Robinson earned Player of the Game honors scoring 2 touchdowns and gaining 90 yards on 19 carries as Johnson's replacement. Robinson put Miami up by 17 with a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, :33 and 2:49 into the quarter. The Hurricane offense stalled and Penn State was able to kick a field goal with 1:18 left in the half to make the score 24-10, then :48 later, Marquardt was hit as he threw, his pass was intercepted by Matt Scott, who returned it 64 yards for a touchdown to make the halftime score 24-17.

Penn State and Miami exchanged possessions in the 3rd quarter and no one was able to put points on the board, so we headed to the 4th quarter with Miami barely hanging on to their 7-point lead with the ball. Miami drove deep into Nittany Lion territory, then on 4th and Inches to go, Alexander rolled the dice. The gamble did not pay off as Marquardt tried to squeeze a pass in to big senior receiver Austin Copeland, but the pass fell incomplete. Penn State took full advantage of the bad gamble quickly moving the ball down the field and scoring on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Watkins to D Burnett. On their ensuing possession, Miami moved the ball steadily down to the Penn State 35 yard line, but when the drive stalled out there, Everett returned to the field to attempt another field goal, didn't make clean contact and the the 52-yard attempt came up short. Penn State now had the ball poised to drive down the field and complete an impressive comeback win, but Watkins, under duress, threw into coverage again and Montoya redeemed himself with a key interception. Miami was able to get a couple crucial 1st downs, salt away the clock, and after Penn State used their final timeout to ice Adam Everett with :03 left, the senior cooly kicked the ball straight down the middle from 29 yards as time expired for the win!

Next week, Miami will travel to Manhattan, Kansas to take on the Kansas State Wildcats. Miami improved to 1-0.

    Andrew Everett forces a fumble

Miami's offense sputtered a bit in the 1st Quarter, but caught a bit of traction in the 2nd Quarter. The defense played well throughout, holding Kansas State to just 200 yards of total offense and only 47 of those came on the ground. The Canes constantly harassed the Wildcats' Quarterback, Z Ingram, sacking him 5 times and intercepting one of his passes. Heading into the 2nd Quarter, Miami had a 6-0 lead after Adam Everett kicked field goals of 22 and 48 yards. Just over a minute into the 2nd Quarter, Austin Copeland separated himself from the defense and hauled in a 32-yard touchdown catch. Two and a half minutes later, Ron Robinson scored from 7 yards out and Miami went into the half up 20-0.

The Hurricanes put the game away in the 3rd Quarter with rushing touchdowns from John Bennett, Darrell Marquardt, and Anthony McDonald. The starters wouldn't see the field again for the rest of the day and Kansas State was able to get a consolation touchdown before Everett finished off the scoring with his 3rd field goal of the day from 51 yards. Miami travels to Virginia in Week 3 to open up ACC play.
