Trojans Defeat Cal with 4th Qtr Comeback
USC traveled to Berkley to face Cal in a cross over PAC-12 game that could set the tone for the Trojans title hopes. After intercepting the Bears on their first possession the Trojans moved the ball deep into Cal territory. Facing a 3rd and goal from the Bear 2 yard line the Trojans thought they had their first TD of the game when Murray found his WR wide open in the left flats, but unfortunately the ball bounced off the WR helmet and the Trojans had to settle for a FG and a early 3-0 lead. The Bears then responded with 14 unanswered points when they scored on a 82 yard TD strike and a 42 yard TD run. The Trojans picked up 2 points late when the Trojans sacked the Cal QB in his own end zone and USC went into the half trailing 14-5. The Bears increased their lead in the 3rd Qtr when they converted on a 43 yard FG and going into the 4th Qtr lead 17-5. Early in the 4th the Trojans cut the lead to 17-12 when Murray found his All-American TE Robinson open in the end zone for a 5 yard TD pass. The two teams traded possessions until late when things got really strange. The Trojans began a drive with 3 minutes reaming in the game but threw an interception around mid field and set the Bears up for the potential knock out blow. But the Trojan defense stiffened and forced the Bears to attempt a 54 yard FG. The kick was short and the USC deep man decided to bring the ball out of the end zone. During the return the Trojans were penalized for a clip around the 25 yard line. But to everyone's surprise the EA Referees gave the Bears the option to decline the penalty and give the ball to USC at the Trojan 30 or they could accept the penalty and give the ball to USC at the Trojan 45 yard line. While the Bear coaching staff was looking over the options the EA Referees decided they are taken long enough and penalized USC and gave them the ball at the Trojan 45 yard line with just under 2 minutes to go. The Trojans then proceeded to drive down and scored on a 10 yard TD pass from Murray to Robinson, and USC escaped with a 20-17 win.
After the game Cal coach John Crow was visible upset about the way the EA Referees handled that late game penalty and honestly I cant blame him for being upset. John Crow played a great game despite EA's efforts.
