    2010 Tennessee Volunteers Game Recaps

    Week 1
    [IMG]

In a game that was predicted to be a lopsided affair, the Volunteers didn't disappoint.

They got off to a slow start as they led by only seven points going into the second quarter. When they came back out onto the field for the second frame it was as if a different team came off the sidelines. It was a dominating rainy day in Knoxville and UT was able to hold MTSU to less than 100 yards in both passing and rushing.

It wasn't a perfect day for Tennessee as their back-ups came in after the first half and fumbled once (Oku) and threw an INT (Bray).

Matt Simms looked comfortable at QB as he threw for over 300 yards in the first half before taking a seat on the bench. Tyler Bray had a tough game as he connected on only 1 of 6 passes and threw an INT.

Senior LE, Gerald Williams came away with two sacks on the day as the Volunteer defense stepped up for the shut-out.

LSU's Defense made a statement early with 3 turnovers in the first quarter to take a demanding lead early. UNC just could not make up for the lost ground.

Boston College started the season off on the right foot by pulling away late from Connecticut. Montel Harris, who ran for 159 yards on 26 carries and 1 touchdown, was named player of the game. BC's defense played well after giving up a touchdown on the opening drive.

Florida started off the 2010 season with an easy win over over-matched Miami of Ohio.

With a score of 48-3, Gator nation probably think all is well in Gatorland but the play of John Brantley has the coaching staff concerned. Other than the first play from scrimmage when Jeff Demps raced to a 45yd Td run.. The Gator offense was pretty much nonchalant. Brantley threw 3 picks in the redzone and the offensive line play was poor. Brantley was continually harassed and sacked 3 times.

The Defense was solid despite giving up some big plays but overall the coaching staff was contempt with the effort.

The player of the game was Jeff Demps.. He had 92 yds on just 8 carries with the long tochdown and 180 more yds through Punt Returns with a long of 43.

Up next for the Gators is a home game against South Florida and then they travel to hated Tennessee.. They need to play much better if they're going to defeat those two solid teams but the staff thinks they will get better with each and every week.

Tech falls in epic heart breaker to #5 Boise State
    [IMG]
Has the sun set on Virginia Tech's title dreams already?

    BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA
-- The Virginia Tech fans across the nation felt deja vu after Tyrod Taylor's pass fell harmlessly to the turf and possibly ended Virginia Tech's shot at a National Title. After years of being a mainstay in the BCS Bowls, Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer thought that the 2010-2011 season was finally the year that Tech would make it to the BCS National Championship Game. Just like last season, Virginia Tech lost it's season opener to Alabama last season and this year it has fallen to the Broncos of Boise State. On a rainy day in Blacksburg, it seemed as if the rain swept away the positive feeling that the Hokie faithful had coming into the season. "Everyone knows that Boise State has made a name for themselves over the years and it really would've boosted us to win this game" said Head Coach Frank Beamer.

The optimism that surrounded the Hokies this season quickly faded as Broncos quickly galloped to a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter. After the rough first quarter for the Hokies' Defense, they really settled in and dominated the Broncos offense led by pre-season Heisman favorite Quarterback Kellen Moore. The Hokies forced 2 turnovers in the 2nd half and kept their offense in check the entire way after the quick start. Senior Safety Davon Morgan noted "We had really bad tackling in the first quarter, but after that we just knew what they were trying to do on the field and our defense really played well as a unit." The offense could never quite get in rhythm and it showed all night long as the rain poured down and Senior Quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw incompletion after incompletion. He ended up 14-for-37 on the night with 177 yards and 2 interceptions. "I really feel like I didn't perform as I should tonight, and my heart goes out to my entire defense because they kept us in the game. I put this game on my shoulders and this will help me grow into a better player" said Taylor. Star Running Back Ryan Williams had a stellar game as the featured back with 25 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown on the evening. Williams did lose one fumble when the Tech defense had caused a fumble and put the offense in great field position. The last possession for the Virginia Tech offense was dramatic to say the least as Taylor took the Hokies inside the Boise State 30-yard line with a pass to Junior Jarrett Boykin and a run after finding no open receivers down field. With roughly 15 second remaining and no timeouts remaining, Taylor checked down to Williams, but Williams just barely failed to make it out of bounds. The clock kept running as the Hokie offense scrambled to get a final play off and just nearly got it off. Taylor rolled to his right and flung the ball to number one wide receiver Boykin in the endzone, but the ball was batted away by a Bronco defender as the time on the scoreboard read 0:00. The Broncos rushed onto the field in triumph after surviving a huge test from the ACC Pre-Season favorite Virginia Tech Hokies.

The Hokies will have to settle for trying to redeem themselves the rest of the season and trying to capture another ACC title. Next week's game will pit Virginia Tech against Marshall at Lane Stadium with kick-off at 12 P.M. Eastern time. Check your local television listings for broadcast information.

Atlanta, Georgia: There were a lot of questions to be answered coming into this season and most still remain unanswered. We did find out that the Yellow Jacket defense is going to be fine. Although they gave up 389 yards to Akron, 100 of that was on a single play which should have been a safety. The defense also forced 3 turnovers and sacked Akron QB Patrick Nicely 4 times.

QB Joshua Nesbitt seemed to have some first game jitters under the new regime and he played poorly. He could not get going with his option attack and ended with 20 carries for -13 yards. He was also woefully inaccurate with his passing, only going 5 of 16 with 1 TD. There were no real standout performances on offense and the team needs to get a better grasp on their attack and their palybook or it will be a long season. K Scott Blair also had a disappointing game missing 2 very makeable field goals.

CB Dominique Reese was named player of the game with 3 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception and a forced fumble.

Next week the Yellow Jackets will play a game at Kansas so the team really needs to have their game together. We expect a lot of practice this week with the offense, and giving the defense some time to take it easy.

    Couple of thoughts.
    Need more video highlights!
Nice to see the Hokies lose.
    Yo Wolfpack? Where's the defense??
Is it just me or does Florida's Demps look fast as shit? You see the acceleration on that punt return?

He's one of the fastest players in the game when you count in both acceleration and speed... or so it seems when playing with him or against him.

Yeah man, he is unreal.. I believe he's 99 in both speed and acceleration. I'm really going to make a concerted effort to keep his carries down this season. I love having that huge weapon in the return game. Don't be surprised if Moody ends up with more carries at the end of the season. Big games like the one next week in knoxville, expect to see a healthy dose of demps rather than moody.

This game was pretty much a beat down. The first drive of the game, the Razorbacks drove down the field, mostly on the ground. The drive was capped by a pass from Ryan Mallett. From then on out, it was all Arkansas, as they went on to score 48 more points in the final 3 quarters. The only bright spot for Baylor today was a drive in which Robert Griffin completed all of his passes en route to their only score of the game.

    Defense
The Razorback defense was tenacious. They went for the jugular on every play, and provided a beat down on the bears. Junior Linebacker Jerry Franklin led the way, with 10 tackles and 4 sacks. He was in the backfield the whole game, or so it seemed. The secondary finished the job, providing interceptions.

    Offense
When your offense puts up 55 points, you know you didn't do too poorly. The Razorbacks were able to move the ball at will. Mallett did throw two picks, and he'll need to improve on that if they hope to have a shot at winning an SEC title. The running backs did outstanding for Arkansas today, combining for just under 400 yards rushing. Receiver Jarius Wright had a big game as well, pulling in 7 balls and scoring twice.

All around it was a solid day for Arkansas. Next week they play UL Monroe. Arkansas will have their first test in Week 3, when they play SEC powerhouse Georgia.

Holy stat whore batman! Why was your starting halfback even in the game for the second half?? You were up 35-0? And you never benched Mallet?

haha, I hope you're right.. I'd be much more confident if I was using the FSU multiple playbook as I know that thing like the back of my hand.. This Gator playbook is really going to take some time getting used to.. I didnt even complete 50% of my passes with Brantley throwing 3 picks.. By looking at what Arkansas just did, they might very well be a force to be reckon with. Plus, senior members Nautica and OutSpokenPoet rolling with good teams, i've never played those guys but I can imagine their quite good along with everyone here.. I'll know much more about where I stand among this group when I travel to Tennessee.

I took my starters out after the first drive of the second half... I have Wingo starting over Johnson.

I ran the ball on every play after that, so I didn't pass the ball.
