Tennessee Closing Out The 2010 Season Strong

After losing two straight SEC games, the Volunteers have bounced back with two games to go. They won't be playing any high profile games, but it could be a chance to put up some big numbers for some of their back-ups.

Word is that they plan on pulling their starters at halftime of the next two games. This is assuming of course, that they will be winning those games at halftime.

"This is really going to be an effort to keep our underclassmen from leaving the team in the off-season. We want these guys to know that we need them." - Coach Poet

With the SEC championship on the line, these two old SEC East rivals matched up in a classic down in the swamp.

South Carolina won the toss and elected to receive the ball. The Gamecocks moved the ball pretty well on their opening drive but were eventually forced to punt. The Gators also moved the ball well on their opening drive but they would convert for the score. The South Carolina defense bit on a John Brantley PA, Brantley would hit a streaking Chris Rainey for a 33yd TD. The Gamecocks again moved the ball well on the Gator defense on their second drive. This time they were rewarded when Stephen Garcia hit Dion Lecorn on a slant for a 11 yd touchdown. On the ensuing drive, the Gator offense was again hitting on all calenders. Mixing up the run & pass, the Gators marched down the field. Sensing a blitz, Brantley would call a screen pass. It worked beautifully when Brantley would hit TB Emmanuel Moody, Moody would take the screen and go 28yds untouched into the endzone for the score. With about a minute left in the half, the Gamecocks decided to go for more points. Garcia was flushed from the pocket and after gaining about 10 or so yards, he was hit and the Gator defense forced the fumble, Florida would recover the ball deep in South Carolina territory. After moving the ball to about the Gamecock 5, the drive stalled and Florida would attempt a 22 yd chip shot. Gator kicker Caleb Sturgis would push the gimme from the left hashmark to end the half. Halftime Score - Florida 14 South Carolina 7

Florida would receive the ball in the second half. The Gamecock defense would step up and force the first Florida punt of the game. Again, led by Garica, the Gamecock offense moved the ball well but the drive stalled inside the Gator 5. Coach Bud Light was forced to kick a 21yd field goal and Spencer Lanning would not miss his chip shot. The field goal would cut the lead to 4. Both offenses seemed to move the ball at ease on these defenses. The Gators did so again on their next drive. After taking up about 5 minutes, Moody would plunge into the endzone for the 14th time of the season to extend the lead to 11. Noticing the game starting to get away from them, Garcia and the Gamecocks went mostly to the 5 WR sets, Florida's secondary could not handle this strategy. South Carolina easily moved the ball and Garcia would hit Alshon Jeffery for a 25yd TD. Gator CB Jenoris Jenkins tried for the pick and was burned badly. The Gamecocks decided to go for two to cut the lead to 3. The Gators were getting continually burned in their man to man defense so they decided to go into a zone. The strategy payed off brilliantly. Jenkins, who had just been torched, picked off Garcia on a quick out and took it 95 yards for 2 huge Gator points. With the lead now 7, the Gator ball control offense would take over from there. Again keeping the defense on their toes, Florida would never relinquish the ball again. Brantley, Moody and company would move the ball inside the 10 and then simply run the clock out. It was another hard fought game but the undefeated and top ranked gators would pull out another one.

Final Score - Florida 23 South Carolina 16

Coach AJ Hart couldn't give more praise to a well coached South Carolina team after the game. "Man, that's one hell of a club over there. That was easily the best passing team we've seen. My heart goes out to those young guys in the South Carolina locker room. Maybe on another day, they get us.. Today, we just made a couple more plays and that was the end result in the game."

The player of the game was Gator QB John Brantley. He went 14-17 for 242 yds and 2 TD's. Emmanuel Moody again was solid in the backfield replacing star Jeff Demps. He would finish the game with 99yds on 22 carries with 1 TD. He would also contribute 46yds through the passing game with another TD. WR Chris Rainey led the Gator receivers with 4 catches for 65yds and a TD. TE Jordan Hill would also have a good day with 4 catches of his own for 69yds. South Carolina was led by QB Stephen Garcia. He went 10-13 for 176 yds and 2 TD's. Kenny Miles would pace the Gamecock rushing attack with 13 carries for 74yds. Dion Lecorn would lead the Gamecock receivers with 4 catches for 91 and the 1 big TD.

Up next for the #1 ranked Gators is Florida Atlantic. It should be a tuneup for the trip to Tallahssee when Florida takes on bitter rival Florida St. Florida has now locked up the trip to Atlanta to play in the SEC championship game. Auburn leads the SEC west but will still have to beat Alabama to claim their ticket. LSU and Arkansas will be waiting if they happen to slip up.

Atlanta, Georgia: Disappointing would be the only way to describe this game. With ACC Coastal rival Miami coming to town you would have thought the team would be ready to play. Unfortunately that was not the case.

Fumbles, interceptions, stalled drives and the general inability of the Yellow Jackets to play defense cost the team their 5th loss of the year and 4th conference loss. There were no standout performers from anyone on the Georgia Tech side of the ball. The team was able to move the ball pretty easily but turnovers would cut nearly every drive short. We controlled TOP 20 mins to 13 mins and yet couldnt pull it out.

On the other hand Miami'a Graig Cooper was a beast. Running for 168 yards and 2 TD on 30 carries. One of them was a backbreaking 53 yard run that pretty much deflated the GT defense.

We expect school prestige to go down after this humiliating loss, and are beginning to look forward to 2011. There will be a lot of changes next year, and it's not often you look forward to a senior leaving, but Joshua Nesbitt won't be missed.

In a shocking move, Tennessee Athletic Director Phillip Fulmer came out of retirement and back to the sidelines to take control of his Volunteers. The Vols responded by dominating the Rebels in Oxford. The Vols were led by Matt Simms who completed 21 passes for 296 yards and 4 tds.

Tech Wins Thriller over UNC in Chapel Hill
    [IMG]
The Hokies Defense forced 2 fumbles that were returned for touchdowns on the afternoon.

    BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA
-- The snow falling in Chapel Hill almost ruined Virginia Tech's ACC title bid as the Hokies fell behind 14 points early in the game and needed an amazing play to triumph against the Tar Heels. Turnovers were the story of the game as the teams combined for 11 through the snowy day. At one point in the 4th quarter there were 3 turnovers on 4 plays which had fans everywhere shaking their heads in disbelief. The Tar Heels showed that the ACC is no cake walk for any powerhouse as even though they are 4-5 they had the game won. On a 4th-and-14 play from the 19-yard line with a little over 20 seconds remaining, Tyrod Taylor found Tight End Andre Smith over the middle uncovered to take the lead for good. "It was one of those things where I had a nightmare game, but my teammates believed in me the whole way and I made a play to win the game" said Taylor.

The Defense provided the struggling offense with 2 touchdowns off of fumble recoveries which changed the game's momentum in the first half. North Carolina got rolling early as they struck quick and effectively with a big-play offense full of draws and throws to stud Wide Receiver Greg Little. After the Defense got settled in, they only allowed one touchdown in the 2nd half. "Our Defense has definitely taken some steps back, but we have to get our mojo back soon as our last two games are no freebies" said Coach Beamer.

The Hokies will travel to the University of Miami next week as they try to set up a potential game with rival Virginia that would mean the right to go to the ACC Championship Game.
