Atlanta, Georgia: To say expectations are low for this season would be an understatement. The Yellow Jackets are starting a Freshman QB, one of the worst receiving corps in the league and new playbooks on offense and defense. And then we have one of the toughest schedules in the ACC beginning with #4 Stanford coming to Atlanta.

Well, expectations just got a little bit higher as the Yellow Jackets pulled off the upset. Defeating Stanford 31-26 in a thrilling game. The Cardinal controlled nearly the entire first half, as Freshman QB Kyle Parks struggled with his recievers trying to get open. Thankfully stud CB play from Rashaad Reid's 62 yard INT return for a TD kept the team in it.

With less than 2 minutes left in the first half, Parks engineered a drive which showed why he was highly recruited. Moving the sticks, and then hitting WR Stephen Hill with 18 seconds left in the game left a margin of 14-17 at the half.

During the half, the team made some adjustments after realizing that part of the problem was that HB Embry Peeples only had 5 touches. He would end up with 22 carries for 136 yards and 1 TD.

The second half was back and forth, and once again Parks came up big with the go ahead TD pass to Freshman TE Kyle James with 1 minute left on the clock.

QB Andrew Luck would have none of it and methodically drove his team down to the 11 yard line with 15 seconds left. A gassed defense quickly called timeout, and the next play was the game winner.

Senior DE Jason Peters, would get the Yellow Jackets only sack of the game. Forcing a fumble which was recovered by Georgia Tech to seal the win.

Next week we have another home game against North Carolina to open ACC play.

    Off on the right foot

NC State, under new coach, gets the season started with a big win against Arizona State.

After struggling to get the offense going in the first quarter, QB Russel Wilson and HB Brandon Barnes finally woke up and put 21 points on the board in the 2nd quarter. Wilson finished the game with an impressive 5 TD passes to 1 INT against a pass defense that some say is one of the better in the PAC-10. Barnes eventually got into a grove and powered the ball for 169 yards and 1 TD.

The NC State defense shut down the ASU run game, allowing just 0.17 yards per carry!

VT Begins Another Season With Opening Game Loss
The Spartans had their way with the Hokies Defense on the ground and through the air.

-- Another season begins with frustrated fans across the nation as the Hokie faithful once again see their National Championship hopes die on the first weekend. Michigan State absolutely dominated the second half against Virginia Tech and did not give the Tech defense the chance at turnovers. The Spartans offense looked nearly unstoppable with the running game of Larry Caper and the aerial assault led by Kirk Cousins. 24 unanswered points by the Spartans effectively gave them a chance to run away with the opening game of the season. The ACC schedule begins for VT next week with Duke so the team must go back to the drawing board and get the ship righted to compete for the ACC Championship which was stolen last season by Boston College.

Offensive Player of the Game: RB's Larry Caper and David Spears, 35 rushes, 249 yards, and 3 touchdowns
Defensive Players of the Game: LB Alonzo Tweety, 10 tackles

A big win for the Razorbacks to start the season, offense clicked both on the ground and through the air. The wildcat packages for the Razorbacks were ineffective but the zone read and power run game was effective. Tyler Wilson is poised for a breakout season at quarterback for Arkansas and freshman speedster Phil Young will be good on the special teams as well as in some specialty packages on offense. Joe Adams and Jarius Wright are explosive receivers and Ronnie Wingo is one of the top backs in the country. Look for a big year from Arkansas especially on offense.
