Starting off on the Right Foot

Yesterday marked the dawn of a new season for the Michigan Wolverines and the rest of the college football world. Expectations were high coming into this one for UM, and the Maize n Blue boys did not suffer an early season let-down to lowly Eastern Michigan in this one.

Michigan’s new look offense got the ball to start things off, and marched right down the field easily to go up 7-0. EMU countered with a field goal. The Wolverines then marched right down again for another score, 14-3 after the first. Things got iffy for Michigan in the 2nd tho. Eastern quickly scored, and if it wasn’t for a goal-line stand after a terribly timed Wolverine turnover Eastern Michigan would have had the lead. It was 21-17 Michigan at the half.

After a disappointing first half, the defense as a unit turned it up a notch in the second half, becoming much more aggressive and with that came success. Eastern Michigan couldn’t move the ball at all in the 2nd half, and 2 INT’s by Booby Cissoko and a great performance by the offense carried the Wolverines on their way to an easy season opening victory, 42-17.

The offense looked vastly improved and much more efficient from last year. True it was against Eastern Michigan, but still. Tate Forcier had one of his most effective games, and the running game was superb. The Wolverines now get ready to welcome Coach Smace767 and his ‘Bama boys to Ann Arbor in a rematch of last year’s 41-14 UM victory

    Key Players

    UM QB T.Forcier: 11-15 192 yds 3 TD 1 INT, 9 att 54 yds 1 TD
    UM RB T.Jones: 15 att 114 yds 1 TD
    UM RB V.Smith: 4 att 38 yds, 1 catch 25 yds 1 TD
UM CB B.Cissoko: 5 tack, 2 INT, 1 INT ret for TD

    EMU QB K.McMahon: 19-29 287 yds, 2 TD 2 INT
    EMU SS R.Downard: 18 tack

The Wolverines squared off with Alabama in a rematch of last year's big time Wolverine upset. Things ended up a bit differently this time around. Alabama struck first, and the new Wolverine offense struggled early. Alabama shut down the triple option attack pretty well. The Wolverines were right in it at the half tho, but turnovers sealed their fate. Tate Forcier fumbled twice and had an INT which all led to Bama scores. Denard Robinson took over for Forcier after an injury knocked him out and the redshirt freshmen made things interesting but in the end it was not enough as Bama added a late tally to wrap up the victory, 35-18 Tide. This game left UM with many questions, most notably a QB controversy since Tate Forcier apparently cannot be trusted with the ball in his hands with this offense. This loss seriously jeopardizes the Wolverines' national title hopes but the Big-10 title goal is unscaved and by running the table UM could sneak into the title game. Coach Hood is gonna get his boys back out on the practice field and sort things out as they prepare for a trip to College Station to take on the Texas AM Aggies.

    SIM LOSS

The Wolverines were set to play the Texas AM Aggies, the game was just 2 min in, but it froze and Coach Hood had to take a SIM. Surprisingly his boys let him down in the SIM action, as AM would win 12-9. Coach Hood was extremely dissapointed, but the team's hopes at a Big Ten title are still alive.

Big Letdown in the Big House

Coach Hood was excited to get his boys back out on the field after the dissapointing loss to AM, but his Wolverines overlooked the undefeated Illini and they paid the price for it.

This was a very frustrating game for UM from the start. Eddie McGee was unstoppable all day, as he simply torched the Michigan Defense. The anemic performance by the secondary, coupled with a truckload of turnovers by the Michigan offense led to a very long, head scratching day for Coach Hood and the Wolverine faithful. The Wolverines never led in this one and were down 28-7 at the half. Michigan outplayed the Illini in the second half but it was not enough, Illinois held on for the victory by a score of 38-28.

This game marks the low point of Coach Hood's tenure at UM, this was as disheartening a loss I have ever been a part of. The loss drops UM to 1-3, and with a daunting task of traveling to Happy Valley next week to take on the undefeated Nittany Lions things are looking very bleak for this Michigan squad.

    Key Stats

    ILL QB E.McGee: 24-25 301 yds 3 TD
    ILL WR C.James: 11 rec 136 yds
    UM RB C.Brown: 5 att 98 yds 1 TD

    Forcier a Force in Upset

The Wolverines marched into Happy Valley earlier today knowing that there season hopes were on the line. They could not afford to drop to 1-4 and start off Big-10 play 0-2. After a tough week of practice the Boys from up North knew they had to have a better focus and could not be so careless with the ball. They would do both of those things on this day.

Penn State won the toss and marched right down the field to jump out to an early 7-0 lead. It was not a good start but the Wolverines did not get discouraged like in past weeks. UM ran the ball right down the Nittany Lion's throats on the ensuing possesion which culminated in a TD run. PSU would tack on a late 1st qtr FG, 10-7 PSU after 1. The Michigan D would step it up a little bit in the 2nd qtr, keeping PSU scoreless. The Michigan triple option attack continued to work perfectly, Tate Forcier punched one in from 6 yds out, 14-10 Michigan at the half.

Michigan would recieve to start the 2nd half, and the turnover bug would finally rear its ugly head. However the Wolverines got the ball right back on the next play when Obi Ezeh would lay out the PSU RB and force a fumble. Vincent Smith would score on the next play for UM, putting them up 21-10. However Penn St stepped their game up, forcing another UM turnover and scoring twice to go up 24-21 heading into the 4th.

Michigan knew just how big this quarter was, their season basiclly on the line. They stuck to the ground game which had carried them all day, and Tate Forcier contimued to just dominate the PSU D. His big rushes along with a few perfectly timed pass plays the Wolverines went up 35-24 with just under 2 min to play. Penn State marched right down the field to score, and onverted on the 2-point conversion with 1:07 remaining. UM would recover the onside kick, but was forced to punt it away. Penn State failed to move the ball though, so the Wolverines hung on to knock off #3 undefeated Penn State by a score of 35-32.

What a difference a week makes. The Wolverines showed so much resolve and determination this week, 2 traits that were absent last week. Tate Forcier played the best game of his collegiate career, and the stable of running backs delievered big time today. Also a few changes along the O-line and D-line also proved to be improvements. The Wolverines are now just 2-3 but have a lot of momentum heading into their showdown next week with Coach Noknee and his undefeated Fighting Irish.

    Key Players

    PSU QB K.Newsome: 24-28 312 yds 3 TD
    PSU WR C.Powell: 7 rec 82 yds 2 TD
    PSU LB M.Mauti: 12 tack 1 tfl

    UM QB T.Forcier: 6-8 58 yds, 20 att 173 yds 1 TD
    UM RB V.Smith: 10 att 61 yds 2 TD

    Classic in the Big House

The much anticipated rematch of last year's game of the year took place last night. The Irish entered this one trying to keep their hopes of an undefeated season alive. The Wolverines on the other hand were looking to get back to the .500 mark and keep their Bif-10 title hopes alive. It was another instant classic, for the second year in a row the Fighting Irish and Wolverines battled to double OT, but this time the Irish would prevail.

Notre Dame started the game off hot, moving the ball at will on the UM defense. The Irish were out to a 14-0 lead midway thru the 2nd quarter by the time the Michigan O could get it going. Tate Forcier hooked up with Martavious Odoms for a 32-yard TD which would make it 14-7 Irish at the half.

Things really got interesting in the second half, as the chess match between Coach Noknee and Coach Hood only got tougher. Both coaches were strategizing like crazy with the play-calling, it truely was something cool to be a part of. Both teams would score in the 3rd, so it was 21-14 ND heading to the 4th. The UM D put the clamps down in the fourth, and a 13 yard TD pass from Forcier to Teric Jones would tie it up with 2:22 remaining. The Fighting Irish drove down the field and were on the cusp of field goal range when Michigan OLB Kenny Demens picked off the Dayne Crist pass. For the second straight year these two teams were headed to OT.

Notre Dame would strike forst in the first OT on a 1 yd rush by Robert Hughes, and the Wolverines countered with a Tate Forcier 2 yd run on 4th down. Michigan turned it over in the 2nd OT, and a 20 yard field goal by Brandon Walker sealed the victory for the Irish.

The Wolverines were dissapointed in the outcome but there is no denying this team has made some great strides since the beginning of the season. The most notable improvement is the play of QB Tate Forcier, who is really becoming quite the playmaker for Coach Hood. The loss drops UM to 2-4 on the season, but the way the Wolverines have been playing of late i would be surprised if they lost again this season.

    Key Players

    ND QB D.Crist: 15-23, 269 yds 2 TD, 2 INT
    ND TE K.Rudolph: 6 rec 90 yds
    ND WR D.Walker: 4 rec 103 yds 2 TD

    UM QB T.Forcier: 15-19 198 yds 2 TD, 19 att 64 yds 2 TD
    UM TE M.Webb: 7 rec 68 yds
UM DE R.Van Bergen: 10 tack 3 tfl 2 sacks

I would like to congratulate Noknee on 1 hell of a victory. It was a fun 1 to play, and i wish him the best with the rest of the year. Also i apologize for the lack of highlites here but i had to go right away after this one got finished last night.

I'd like to apologise for my lack of game summaries, I kinda been slacking off in this department, won't happen again. That said, here is a lil synopsis of what's been going on with the Wolverines.

Tate Forcier has continued his accent to stardom, he is a bona-fide playmaker. He has taken over games with both his legs and arm after losing to Notre Dame. The Wolverines were once 2-4 but have rattled off 5 straight. Not all the wins have been pretty but the important thing is Michigan has found a way to win each of them, whether it be Vincent Smith with big runs, Tate Forcier on the ground or Forcier thru the air like it was against Wisconsin where he had a QB rating of 252.0 and threw for 283 yards; a crazy amount for a triple option team. The defense has stepped it up from where they were at earlier in the year but they still aren't the unit they were last year. 5 consecutive wins over Army, Iowa, Michigan St, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have the Wolverines at 7-4, with 1 game remaining against THE hated Ohio St.

Mich D puts Clamps on Pryor

It was that time of year again, time for the annual Hatred Bowl between Michigan and Ohio State. Both teams have struggled a bit this season but both had been turning it around of late. Each team came into this one hyped but only The Maize n Blue would be celebrating afterwards.

It was a defensive showdown in the tuest meaning of the word. Each team brought high power running attacks to the table with Star QB's but this one was all about the Defenses. Each team was bottled up in the first half and it was 0-0 late in the 2nd quarter. Michigan connected on a 34 yd FG with just over 1 min left and then got another 3 as time expired after forcing Ohio State into another 3 n Out.

The key moment of the game came with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Michigan had a 4th n inches at the Ohio St 37. Forcier audibled out of the original play call and Vincent Smith came thru with yet another big-play, a 37 yard scamper to the house to put UM up 13-0. The Michigan D continued to stifle Terrelle Pryor and the Buckeyes, forcing numerous 3 n outs. However the Buckeye D also stopped the UM O, 13-0 heading into the 4th.

Michigan had a few chances to put this one on ice but were unable. Pryor finally got the Bucks on the board with a 1 yard TD run with 3:26 remaining. Ohio St shut down the UM offense and got the ball at their own 4 with 1:20 remaining on the clock. They picked up about 20 yards but Pryor threw his 3rd INT of the day and that ended any hopes of a comeback.

The Michigan D was simply remarkable in this one. It was by far the best defensive performance of my tenure @ UM, and it was great this much maligned group finally played to their capabilities. The Wolverines just found a way to win it, something that has really become the trademark for this team. It was a great game, Coach JFunk has a great team over there and I'm sure we will have many more great duels in the future.

    Key Players

    UM QB T.Forcier: 8-11 114 yds, 17 rush yds
    UM RB V.Smith: 6 att 41 yds 1 TD, 3 rec 37 yds
    UM SS B.Smith: 5 tack, 2 tfl, 1 sack

    OSU QB T.Pryor: 7-17 77 yds, 3 INT, 1 rush yd, 1 TD
    OSU RB J.Berry: 15 att 63 yds, 4 rec 18 yds

The Wolverines have finished their 2010 regular season 8-4, winners of 6 straight. Tate Forcier has really stepped up his game and become one of the most effective QB's in the nation. These boys have finally gotten the kinks of the triple option figured out, and it at times has been a thing of beauty. The Maize n Blue will now hit the practice field as they prepare for their Bowl Game, likely either the Capital One Bowl or the Outback Bowl.

    Committed Recruits

    4-Star DT Jeremy Thomas
    4-Star SS Jason Jean
    4-Star MLB Carlos Pearson
    4-Star HB Lawrence Spicer
    3-Star QB Lawrence Holmes
    3-Star C Sam Dawson
    3-Star OLB Ronnie Harper

We are also close to signing 4 more, I'd be shocked to not get any of these boys...

    5-Star(JUCO) HB Bruce Harwell
    4-Star CB Kyle Scott
    4-Star MLB Rob Crooks
    3-Star TE Gordon Johnson

The jewel of this class may just be a diamond in the Rough. 3-Star QB Lawrence Holmes had only 1 offer, but he is built like Tim Tebow and seems perfect to one day run this Triple Option attack. Harwell will be a welcome addition, I don't normally go for JUCOS but he will supply us with valuable depth as we need many horses in our stable of Running Backs to run this triple option.

    Capital One Bowl

    #22 Florida vs. #9 Michigan

    {img}http://www.mbsportsnet.com/mbcfa/CapitalOneBowlLogo.png{/img}

It was a wonderful New Year's Day in Orlando as the SEC Runner-Up Florida Gators took on Big Ten powerhouse Michigan. Both teams needed the win to salvage their season since nobody wants to have 5 losses, and both of these teams played their asses off. It was a great game and unfortunately it had to end.

Florida came out swinging early on. John Brantley played magnificent throughout and his big play arm got the Gators out to a 14-0 lead after one. It looked like Michigan may have been headed for its second straight bowl loss, but Tate Forcier would have something to say about that. The big time sophomore QB got the UM offense rolling both on the ground and thru the air in the 2nd quarter. A brilliant diving catch by Martavious Odoms nodded the game up at 14. However Brantley led the Gators right back down the field for another score to put the Gators up 21-14 at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive battle. The Michigan offense once again struggled to move the ball, but the Obi Ezeh led defense shut down Brantley n Co. most of the quarter. The Gators finally were able to put up some points, 24-14 after 3.

Forcier knew it was do or die time. Just like he had all year, Tate stepped his game up and put the Wolverines on his back. He led Michigan down the field for a TD, 24-21. Obi Ezeh and the defense then did their part forcing a 3 n out. Time was running low and Michigan was now forced to go for it on 4th down, but were stopped. It looked grim until Brantley fumbled the ball which was recovered by Michigan. The Wolverine offense took the field; but without its 2 best players. QB Tate Forcier and HB Vincent Smith both were sidelined due to injuries. Denard Robinson took over the reigns and cautiously ran the option. Teric Jones broke free for a big play which got UM down to the 1. Robinson punched it in on th enext play for the winning TD with under a minute left. It was just another case of the Wolverines finding a way to win, something they made a habit of lately. This win wrapped up a season in which the Maize n Blue ended on a 7 game win streak which should carry over nicely to next season.
