The Bluest Skies - A Season Preveiw

Here we are another season and a new league. We are your English outlet for Russia's best football team The Sky Blues of Zenit St. Petersburg. With a strong season finishing second in League 1 the team earned the right to play with the big boys in the Premier League. They've been tipped as a team that should stave off relegation safe enough and possibly make a run, this is new territory for the eastern European team who seemed to not get noticed until they made the quarter finals of the Champions League last year. Will they play with the same fight as when they had that chip on their shoulder? Only time will tell but the preseason hasn't shown the best results so far.

Scoring just 2 goals they have a loss and a draw to show for their two tune up games. Manager Dylema doesn't think this a problem because in the second game they we're out possessing the opponent 65-35 and we're showing the slick passing game that lead them to be one of the top teams in League 1 last year. Once they find there goal scoring edge they will be back to the dangerous team they know they can be.

The Sky Blues aren't looking for much, avoiding the relegation battle and making the group stage of the Champions league or the semi's of the Europa league. Only time will tell if they can achieve this goal but Zenit have shown that they can compete with anybody.

The Bluest Skies Vol. 2 - A Trial By Fire and There's No Water in Sight

Zenit went into their first match with hope of getting atleast a point against Porto and establishing their name on the Premier League scene. This was not the case however as Porto came running out of the gate and thanks to some cynical finishing had a 3-0 lead in the blink of an eye. The skyblues didn't let this get to them and still played a solid game but when you have to chase a team like that nothing good can come from it and they eventually suffered a hard lesson at the hands of Porto.

The next match was against the Villians who looked a little tame early as Zenit through numbers forward and played a pressure game. This would lead to a mistake in the back and a goal wonderfully poached from just inside the area. The 1-0 lead would not stand up though as Villa would equalize late. Zenit appeared to revert to a possession game and lost a bit of there edge and got caught out on the counter.

The week ahead does not offer any rest as they play both Atletico Madrid and Juve, both have champions league experience and Juve is a title winning team. The skyblues may need atleast a point to keep there champions league hope alive and you'd suspect that it would have to come from the Atletico game but this is football and anything can happen. A few lucky bounces and they can walk out of here with 3 or 4 points. This is the type of week that determines a season. Will the answer the bell and come out fighting or will they lay down and see there season slowly start to slip away from them.
